Converter questions
Hi. I'm new to auto transmissions, I've always had manuals, so I have a couple of questions.
1.) How exactly does a torque converter work? What's its purpose? Is it like a centrifical clutch?
2.) What do I need to take in consideration when choosing a converter. I am working on building a 350 to replace the 305 that's in it. I know the amount of torque and hp the car makes will effect my decision, but how?
Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. - the tranny is a 700R4 from an 84 Z28, if that effects anything.
