code 21 on 83 carb'ed v6
Well it finally happened...
After about 10500 miles of relatively trouble free driving since the rebuild, the computer finally is kicking a code out and this time it's not intermittent. I have replaced a bunch of little things here and there (mostly correcting previous goof ups) but this is the toughest to date.
About a week ago my SES light comes on and spits out a code 13 and 21. I replaced the o2 sensor and reset the codes. Last night, stuck in DE traffic the light comes on again. Check it -- Code 21. In the past I usually had a vacuum line off and a 21 would be set but after hooking the line back up it would go away.
I don't have a Helm manual for this car and Haynes and Chilton have been less than helpful.
Is the TPS on the e2se carb adjustable? I want to see if itcan be adjusted before I shell out 30 bucks and order one.
How prone are they to fail? Would a boneyard one be a good idea?
Let me know
edit: Would this code 21 cause really sh**ty gas mileage?

Code 21 is TPS for an '83? Doesn't the Haynes give a step by step rebuild of that E2SE? I had one in my hands a lonnnng time ago (swapped one on a friend's '83 camaro 2.8) but don't remember the TPS that well. I remember it had a plunger sticking out of the top, but that's all I can think of....
Here's an article I just dug up via google.com (yahoo.com is having a fit, for some reason, and won't load): http://members.dandy.net/~k0xp/Oldsm...onic_Q-Jet.htm Look under "Troubleshooting cars with electronic carburetors". Under "VI. Carburetion", under "Bleed Controller", look down further for the paragraph that starts off with "The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) tattles to the computer about what the driver's doing with his right foot." (Or just do an edit, find for "TPS" )
Seems to talk about an adjustment there, for 0.26 volts. I like the new picture by your name, by the way! That's funny as hell!

Wow that's a long article... looks like I got my work cut out for me! The carb was rebuilt about 2 years ago and has only really seen much action since April. I was using the 85's helm manual for the carbed cars last night and I'm 85-90% sure the TPS took a dump. I also did the search thing and since I'm not getting other codes (53 was a big one), I'm playing the hunch on the TPS (it just happened -- didn't get worse over time).
Glad you like the new avatar . Maybe I should change usernames from "MDV6man to "monkeyspanker"?
Thanks again!

I was once told by a carb rebuilder shop, those sensor rarely go bad.
IT'S THE SIGNALS TO THE CARB that get screwed up.
PLUS rebuild the base plate throttle shaft yet?
Ya need to!
I have that carb, it's all pure carb, no nothing electric except choke.
In my 1985 Federal version S-10 Blazer.
Just rebuilt it a year ago.
Solved lots of trouble.

Well I got the tps in this past weekend. Albeit not the easiest job but it wasn't too bad. The housing where the shaft pushes down was cracked and a chunk was broken off. New sensor in and my gas mileage has gone back up to acceptable levels. KED, I have one of those non CC carbs in my basement. They only came on the s10s/Blazers. The Camaros had the CC version due to the more stringent mpg requirements at both federal and state levels (car vs. truck). Mine was rebuilt about a year or two ago and has only been used regularly since April when I got it tagged.

You should have been me, trying to get my S-10 Blazer truck passing smog at certain periods of my ownership.
Every station thought I was cheating on lack of smog stuff on my truck (computer for the carb you possess, in CA, that was what my vehicle was)
I pull out HELMS manual show them pics my truck is proper for what it is (a federal version vehicle resold into CA), that doesn't impress them.
HAS TO BE THIS WAY.
I was almost robbed of several hundred dollars of BS by crooked shops.
Finally found a legit smog guy what a concept!
Glad to hear ya results. IF ya need a core carb, let me know, I can grab ya some from a yard. It's great to pick the part ya need, already off the car, on ground!
