custom CAI
ok so last wed, we had are meet up in havertys parking lot, and this 4th gen bird has this ghetto suprecharger, the fact is it is so simply that it actually works...
here it is, taking in mind the whole home depot CAI setup running a 4 inch pvc pipe into a Y and running 2 cone filters, but the main part of this he incorporated 2 4 inch fans ran off a switch in the cab....
said that this dropped him a full second in his 1/8 mile time
mines in the makin i have all the parts cept for the cone filters, he bought cheap im saving for k&n's, so it should be on next week and ill take it to the track and see what happens

a full second; tenths is what most people knock off their times not full seconds.

Here's my custom CAI.
I was going to do the dual intake thing, but I need to relocate my battery first. I have the Y and everything for it. One thing that a friend brought up though is the air colliding in the middle of the Y... I don't know if that would have a negative effect, or a positive "air charging" effect... anybody have thoughts on this?
I've also thought about the fan idea. My MotorSport partner in crime posted this idea to the forums at ProtegeClub.com , and they said it wouldn't work. One member responded, "Today's technology cannot build an electric fan to run off a 12V system that will spin a fan large enough to get any sort of positive manifold pressure anywhere near a car engine's powerband....its simply flows too much mass." If anybody disagrees, please say so, because I would like to try it if it makes a significant difference. krazycracka55, definitely post your results.

I have to agree with the Protege boys...electric fans simply can't produce enough airflow. The extreme, absolute highest cfm electric fan I found was at Radio Shack and pushed 85 cfm. Most range more around 30. Nice idea on paper though! I thought about taking my electric leafblower and rigging her up..hehe..it produces airspeeds of 200 mph!!! Even if I COULD get it to work, I'm sure I'd overboost and blow something. The Y of two pipes coming together shouldn't be detrimental to airflow AS LONG AS it's actually a Y, not a T. If it's a smooth enough Y, the two air streams will just blend together...but if it's harsh, they'll impact eachother and you'll get turbulence.

By the way, Fyre, that's the most beautiful hackjob intake I've ever seen! How did you get that PVC to look so nice? I never imagined PVC would take paint that well..I went with galvanized aluminum...
Also, I assume your conical end is rubber...how did you get it to stay put slid inside the PVC? Screw/bolt?

Why, thank you! It's encouraging to hear words like that. Makes me know that someone else actually appreciates what I did instead of saying "look at that el-cheapo way of doing it..."
As for the paint, I just used that high-temp engine enamel that you can buy at Autozone or wherever. It's actually "Ford Red" but don't tell anybody.... I sprayed each piece individually, let it dry, sprayed the other side, let it dry, and did two or three coats this way. When I originally installed it I must have broken my radiator overflow tube thing that goes from the top of the radiator to my resivoir, because I looked under there after driving it one day after noticing it was warming up, and the tube was broken and there was coolant everywhere... and it melted into my PVC!! It was on the underside though so you can't see it, and it was only surface damage, so no biggie. So I took it out and repainted the intake from the damage caused, and now it looks just like in the picture. Reclamped the hose and haven't had a problem since.
As for the filter, I just used epoxy. Worked fine.

That does look nice FyreLance.
I myself got some 3" muffler pipe, cut it to fit, welded my IAT "nut" into it to get my threads, painted to match the car, and Put a autozone euro filter on the end. Now that its cooler, I plan on making a baffle to keep the engine heat away from the filter.
If you feel like searching, I have posted pics.

I'd like to do that too, but I wasn't sure where to start... if you have any ideas you're willing to share , please let me know.

If you want, I can get dimensions this weekend for you. Its quite heavy though. If you search for me or CAI topic, I posted a decent pic right after I made it. I give ya any info you need. I'm not a stickler and keep my thoughts to myself.
My site link below shows a crappy pic of it for now.

Dimensions and such would be nice, I would appreciate it. Thanx!
Maybe I'm a moron but I was unable to locate any pictures of your CAI with the shield
EDIT: Just realized that's because you haven't made it yet. My bad, I misunderstood the post.

how in the hell can you get enough power out of a car to run a toro leaf blower??? I mean power inveeters cost big bucks, I got one that cost 50 bucks and it wont run ****, said it would do a tv, nope, only thing it has even run fine is my shaver, small clip on fan for my central air, 900mhz wireless head phones, just enough power to keep my laptop at what ever % it is at, but dont charge any higher.

Hey..look at that engine...see the intake location and the distributor? Looks like a Fox Body 5.0 engine doesn't it?
