also, i know they come with 3.1's but its labelled as a 3800, which is the same as my friend's 91 buick regal, and he says his is a 3.8. and the engine that's in the firebird is exceptionally clean and good running while showing 196,000 miles

No thirdgen ever came with a 3.8 except for 1555 1989 Turbo Trans Am's.....and if you had one of those, you would know it. 82-89 came with 2.8L and 90-92 came with 3.1. 93-95 4th gen's came with 3.4's and the California 95 Cars received the first 3.8L's. From 96+ all 4th Gen V6's came with 3.8's. 3800 is the designation for the 3.8.

my aunts 90 f bird is a V6, and she says its a 3.8L, she bought it used, maybe the previous owner did a swap, who knows. she says it has the 3800 badge on the back, so is it a 3.8?

What's with everybody claiming to have 3.8's in non-1989 thirdgens lately?
As stated elsewhere, PICS=PROOF.

If the engine points from the left side to the right. Its 3800
if it points from the windshield to the bumper. its a 3100
i highly doubt someone wasted money on making a non turbo 3800 fit into the car.
it costs just as much as a v8 practically.

Best of my knowledge:
3.1 = Series I motor. 3100 = Series II motor with better flowing aluminum heads and intake. Distributorless ignition and larger valves. (From the Grand Prix's. Regals and Cutlass' came with 3.1's)
3.8 = Series I motor. Found in 1980's Buick Regal T-Types and Grand Nationals. Distributorless ignition. (With attached Garrett TE44, 61, or 62 turbo charger)
3800 = Series II motor (L36). More aluminum parts and a counter-rotating balancer shaft. Intake faces rear of engine. Found in newer Regals, Grand Prix's, etc with the 3800 badging. (Although some newest models do not include badge) Can come equipped with factory Eaton M90 supercharger (L67), producing a minimum of 240HP, Weeeeeee!!!.

hows this from my 85-2000 Haynes Poncho, Buick, Oldmobubble book:
1985 3.8L has distributor
1986-88 3.8L TypeI has single coil w/6 posts (magnavox)
1986-88 3.8L Type II has 3 coil pack s w/2 posts per coil
86-88 motors have coil(s) on firewall side of engine
1989-91 3800 has single coil w/6 posts
coil pack in front pass side of motor
1992-94 3800 has 3 coil packs in front pass side of motor
technically, 89-94 motors are 3800 Series I
1995-Present 3800 Series II has 3 coil packs in front pass side of motor
