Best Direct Replacement Coil

That's the question... I've heard Accel, I've heard Blaster 1...what do you all prefer? Just looking for a good direct replacement, high (or at least higher than stock) voltage coil. I'd say it's about time I replaced my coil..and since my dad just paid for brand new rear tires for me (Yeah, it was his gift to me on HIS birthday!), I now have $150 to spare...so that means...front end alignment and coil. Wahoo! Gotta love it. Thanks guys.

Price is also of fair consideration...not too pricey is it? I'm thinking between $50 and $70 sounds right for me.

I'm running an Accel coil because it came with my Accel 300+ ignition. I can't say how good it is because I never tested it by itself. My cap, rotor, and module are also upgraded Accel products too.

If I chose a coil by itself I would probably have chosen and MSD coil. Just a personal preference.

Yes, I second this quote.

My personal feeling about MSD are not too high. I had some problem with their systems on my Vette years back. Everything was givin to me free through Centerforce and was not happy with its durability. MSD has a great warrantee exchange- they definately stand behind their product- but that doesn't do you any good when your standed on the side of the road for the moment. I strongly feel their stuff is more for short term race applications.

Stick with Accel or Hypertech.

General consensus seems to be Accel or Hypertech then... Given that...I don't know..there's something I just don't like about Accel. I think it stems from the TERRIBLE color schemes they tend to give their products...but it just seems too common for me. I'll probably go Hypertech...I'll let y'all know how that works out in about 2 weeks or so...bet it'll make a big difference over my stock coil. Any way to test coil output, like with a multimeter?

Nope, you'll fry the meter.

As rpm's increase, coil saturation (and therefore, coil output voltage) decreases. So your 45,000 volt coil won't be putting out 45,000 volts at 5500 rpm. But, the aftermarket coil will be putting out more juice that the stocker would be!

I'm running a Blaster SS now, used to run an Accel "computerized remote HEI" coil, both are fine. Ran the Accel coil until '2000, when I put the MSD 6AL box on that my fiance bought me. When I put the MSD 6AL box on, I put the Blaster SS coil on, for no other reason than I wanted everything to be MSD.

Hey tom, the book does show a way to test the coil. But I don't think its for the way hes wanting to test it. It just shows weither its "good or bad", not "you have this kinda volts output".

I am running a MSD Blaster GM, MSD Superconductor wires and a Holley Ignition Control Module (replaces the stock ICM module that goes inside the distributor - not an Ignition Box like the MSD 6AL). I bought this stuff last summer when the stock ignition control module died. I noticed that the Holley module was $60 from summitracing.com and a stock replacement was $60 locally. I wanted to buy the MSD wires and coil anyways, so I grabbed the module with the wires and coil. There was a definite change in the throttle - snappier response and it revs faster I swear. So far I am very happy with the MSD coil and wires and the Holley ICM.

Yeah Dale, I'm looking to just test the current coil's output.. I know it's ok because, well, the car runs. Was just hoping to have a way to check its output that way I can re-order my "sh*t to replace" list.....

go with the hypertech i have put MSD's on and really noticed no difference but with the hypertech i put on my z28 there was a noticeable improvement in idle throttle response and power.

Use an Airtex waterpump, they are the best quality aftermarket brand. I just put one on last week.
