Steering work getting done!
FINALLY!!!
I went up to the yard this past Friday with the intention of pulling a complete power steering box, pump and hoses off of a decent third gen to repair my leaking worn out unit on the 83.
Well found me a nice late 80's TA with all the goodies. That was the donor. Only ended up with the steering box though as the pump was attatched using those lovely Torx bolts and I didn't bring mine. All the other pumps looked like they leaked as well. Paid nothing for the box as I charged another guy the full price for the Corsica parts he needed. I would have gotten the fat sway bars and other stuff but didn't feel like laying in the steady stream of sludge that was running under the car due to the melting snow.
Last night I started removing my pump, box and hoses. It will be off tonight.
I will be replacing the pump and pressure hose with store bought units.
How do I seal the return line fitting at the box? It seems that the O-rings are MIA. What size are they?

Can't help much with the o-ring bit; but, good luck with the switch! Do you know if the box is the quick-ratio one? I've had one in my basement for years... hopefully it's still okay, I'd like to put it on this summer.

Well it came off a well equipped Trans Am. It's front sway bar was HUGE so I could only assume it had WS6. There were no RPO's to verify it though.

If it is a real WS6, then the steering box is gonna be high ratio. Friend of mine has an 84 T/A with the top motor for the year..the L69....quad disc brakes, high ratio steering, beefier suspension, etc. It's pretty nice!

The quick ratio box's casting number should be something like 26000000000525, with a "Z" on the box- sorry, too tired & burnt out to do a full search... these 14 hour days are killing me; I'd swear my eyes are bleeding... i've put the casting number up before on this v6 board, so it should be floating around somewhere. My poor p/s pump is so dead it's not even funny.... original '86 one went out a few months ago, front seal ripped and leaking like crazy, replaced it with a $15 junkyard one which worked for a week, then no power steering when I come to a stop. Makes a damn awful scraping noise, too. It's okay; goes along with the scraping noise from my worn out brake pads.
Oops I'm just rambling.. need more coffee. DAMN I can't wait for the summer! My poor car...

Vacation days are much better than giving your life away to "the man".

I swear, Tom is one of the only guys on here that would post a good guess for a 14 digit casting number for a power steering box and APOLOGIZE for not doing a full search! Damn man..you should charge for this stuff! I'm charging a friend of mine to install his starter.....only because he's not one of my good friends and because he's dumb enough to pay me.

Heheh, well, I'm not -that- good... I hung on the zero key for a while. Some guy on the tech board said a chick offered him a BJ to work on her car. And I've always been the moron that's worked on girls cars work for free, or for food or beer.
Well, I'm not technically full time (still a student, dammit...), but I might as well be. My program went into it's beta test phase this Monday; put it onto our production servers. Didn't have much trouble moving the program over- but my test server was an old desktop computer from 2001- fast, but nowhere near a server! So most of my time this week was spent trying to "use" all the resources of the server. We've proposed Monday for a real live launch date... so after Monday, I'll have my life back again. It's been a long 8 months, these past 3 were the worst. At least I'll have the fiance's ring paid off! (I might be dead and single by then, but who knows!)
Ran the search, here's the skinny:
That's from message https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=58243 . I got that information years ago from when I was a member on the hardcore-tech-only 82-92 mailing list from f-body.org. That was a hell of an informative mailing list- as long as you don't mind getting 100-200 messages a day! And if you think thirdgen.org is strict about non-tech, try posting a non-tech message on that list- you'll get booted and not be allowed back, no warning!

Want numbers?
I was told a whilllle ago that the quick-ratio box from a 15" wheel'd car has # 7826692 on it. The IROC one (16 inch wheels) I bought had 26000525 and a "Z" on it. One of these days I'll install it!
