belt tensioner

ok, i've had problems with my serp belt making rattling noises when the a/c is on. I recently replaced the compressor, replaced the belt twice, and my tensioner twice (noise is still there) and I have determined that the tensioner is making the annoying rattling sound, even though they were both new. The a/c delco one would make rattling noises but would move a lot. The napa one I currently have doesn't move around, but makes the same annoying sound. Do you guys think I just got two bad tensioners? Or is there something else wrong going on here?

Re: belt tensioner

Had the same problem and did exactly what you did and nothing helped..what I did find out when I swapped cylinder heads is that at the back of the P/S pump there is a bracket that connects to a stud/nut that holds on the exhaust manifold(cylinder #2) should be the lower stud/nut and it appeared like it was still connected but once I removed the other bolts holding on the manifold ,I realized it was broken and it looked like it was still attached. One reason I did the head swap was I thought I had two broken bolts off on the top of cylinder 1&2 but after removing the manifolds I had both upper and lower bolts broken. It took care of my vibration..I thought I had a bad compresser ,not enough oil in compressor, crappy serp belt.etc.The stud was broken, but the break was inside the manifold hole,so it appears like it was still attached.

Re: belt tensioner

Only thing I can say is make sure all your bracket bolts are tight..and you could remove the belt and see if theres any play in the alt bearings, water pump etc.One last thing is make sure your harmonic balancer ring hasnt slipped or the rubber in between the ring is still intact. If you do find out what it is please post it ..never know when someone will have the same symptom.
