intake/exhaust headers back and you should just stomp that gas through the floor odds are it wont blow these engines are pretty tough .

Search.

You really can't over rev on an auto. It'll shift when its supposed to.

Re: tired 3.1L what can i do

well i beat him good lol. that first gear really helps. he started to catch up a little around 70 but we ran out of road to see what would happen.

how much are headers for my car?

also would chipping it do anything?

Re: tired 3.1L what can i do

Check Summit for headers, I don't recall them being all that much. Not too many places carry headers for those engines. Chipping it probably wont do much, they are usually only good for maybe 10hp. Doing a custom chip would be better, but you have to have the supporting mods for it to be worth the price. As nixon5 said, headers, new exhaust all the way back, and a cai kit or homemade cai. You could also try upping the fuel pressure and see if you can find injectors with a higher lb/hr rating than the ones you have. Were the plugs, wires, cap/rotor, and coil changed recently? With that kind of mileage they are all well past due for a change.

Higher rear end ratio will help it get moving faster as will dropping weight, but wont actually increase power levels.

From there you are basically into the realm of turbo- or supercharging and/or nitrous. More expensive and custom chips are pretty much a requirement.

Most people will tell you V8 swap, and I have one planned for mine. Thats the best as far as price/power ratio.

Re: tired 3.1L what can i do

its had a major tune up inlcuding

plugs, wires.cap & rotor, sensors, injectors, computer, and alot more.

i was thing of a 373 posi but would that kill my freeway?

i have a 350 4 bolt with 2.02 heads that needs a rebuild kit but how hard is it to switch from a computer controlled car to a carb??

thanks and im in school so im not rich lol.

Re: tired 3.1L what can i do

3:73's wont kill ur gas milage

its will be a 500rpm diff at a given mph then what ur at now

intown milage will prolly increase, the gears make it easier to get the car moving meaning less throttle opening to take off and cruise as well

u may possible lose 1-2 mpg on the highway though depends on how much highway driving u actually do

Re: tired 3.1L what can i do

i do very little highway.

its gonna cost me about 400$ to get the gears and have my freind install them. would i have a better chance of junkyarding a mid 80s trans am,formula, or z28? also do i have to do anything for the computer with the new gear. i was told it will mess my transmission shift points and my speedo will be off?

thanks alot guys.

Re: tired 3.1L what can i do

well u can go get a rear out of a 89 or older 2.8 car those have 3:42 gears

u could also see what cars came with 3:73's

yes it will throw ur speddo off u have a 3.1 which means u have a vss sensor on the side of the transmission so im not sure how u would correct it

on the older maf cars the 2.8 cars there is a lil plastic speddo gear u could swap out and they generally run 15 bucks for the new gear. u take out one 10 mm bolt pull out the gear and drop the new one in.

do not buy used gears liek just agear set buying a used rear is one thing, used gears are much harder to setup and increase the likleyness of gear noise or improper pattern.

summit sells the gear sets for 189$'s last time i checked and an install kit is 99$'s

so u should be able to buy everything new for just a touch under 300

ur avg shop should run 300-400 for labor to install the gears if u go somewere and they try to charge u more walk out.

my shop gets 300 labor in car and 200 labor on the bench to setup a rear, and is very typical of the other shops in the area just to give u an idea of what u should be paying if u have to go that route
