i have a 2.8 with factory carb when i first got the car there was no take off at all hardly but i ran it for a while and shot carb cleaner in it and it got better but it still feels like the take off aint there first would changeing the factory 2brl to a 4 brl q jet make any differnece and what else could i do to make some difference i cant even get it to chirp the tires on take off and for a camaro i would atleast be able to turn the back wheels its 83 sport has 73000 miles and fresh tune up any ideas thanks

If you really wanna clean our the carb run sea foam through your gas tank. Its only $8 at walmart and I pulled my carb after I ran it through and all the carbon buildup in the bottom of the manafold was cleaned out and the carb looked perty good. I just did a full tune up and exhaust on mine and I can barely chirp the tires on takeoff so don't feel to bad there, just work on the suspension and outrun them on the corners.

a 4 barrel qj is mechanical secondary, it would flood the hell out of a 2.8 an aftermarket carb with vacuum secondaries would be better.

i have a good running fuel injected 2.8 and it wont chirp the tires at all. its a v6.

something's wrong with your cars guys, I can spin a little in second. first is no problem. do the seafoam stuff, it can really work wonders.

My car is good. I just put a new torque converter (2343stall) and tranny in it, put on a new carb, dizzy cap, ign module, plugs and wires, coil, nd exhaust. I think the reason I can't spin them is because of my tires, I have really sticky 225's on it but when I had my 205's on it I could really get them spinning in first but I got nothing in 2nd.

yea, tires do make a big difference. I've got 235s on mine, but they're not super sticky.

Ok if it is the carb I think it is then its complete crap for any form of performance. I would save some cash for a cam and the 4bbl set up and then do exhaust and you should have some chirp.

I like my '84 Camaro, but the factory 2bbl 2.8 is a dog, plain and simple. On my '83 Camaro, I used to "cheat" by holding the choke all the way off with a rubber band ("backyard" though it may be), and that helped some, but not much. My '84 is better (with a properly working choke), but still won't spin the tires much. These engines are only rated at 107-110 HP; and often don't even feel like they're performing up to that standard.

There is a holley 4bbl out there that will sit on an Edelbrock intake made for the 60° V6. My younger brother worked with a kid that had this setup in his '84 Camaro V6, and the kid said it worked great. I priced it out and it came to around $900 for the parts. But other than that, there's really nothing you can do to get more power out of this motor without internal engine work.

My advice to you, if you're going to keep that engine, is to keep an eye on the carburetor float, check your oil once in a while , and don't beat on it much. A big problem with these carb'd 2.8's is that the carb float will sink and cause raw fuel to dump into the crankcase and thin out the motor oil. With an already-weak crank, this sets the stage for spinning a rod bearing. It happened to my buddy's car, and then it happened to mine too (and with 138k mi, I was trying to baby it).

2.8 carb really sounds like a good car to swap to a V8 with.

yeah id like to do a swap but after looking into it its gonna be a while till i can come up with the funds to do that big of project im gonna try to put a 4brl qjet and change the exhaust to a glass pack and cut the cat off this week end and see how that does
