bad Vehicle speed sensor?

its a 1990 Camaro RS with the 3.1L V6. Had problems with it over the summer bad ran good until the other day when it decided it wanted to stall. Heres whats up:

1) Idles high, fast, when i first start theh car, it will idle at like 2500 2750 rpm until i drop it into gear and then it will idle at 1500 or 1750.
2) Surges
3) Lunges forward when it surges at a red light or stop sign
4) Hesitates when launching
5) stalled the one day....
6) replaced the IACV once but the new one worked worse than the old so I put it back in
7) New tps sensor
8) Thought something was wrong with transmission/torque converter but tranny is full of fluid, its auto
9) When idling in park the ECM spits out code 24 which is a bad VSS, but can it really cause all that?

I read that sometimes it can but im not sure if i just need a new IACV and some new vacuum lines or not...

I had a full intake job done on it in july....all new intake manifold gaskets put on car, new alternator, new map sensor, new tps like i said, new egr valve, 2 new injectors, and now debating the problems with the VSS

The speedo does climb weird sometimes, but its nothing horrible, sometimes it will like snap into place when accelerating versus gliding up the speedo.

I also read that a bad VSS will make the torque converter act weird which is what I thought was going on with it, so maybe thats why?...

I dont understand why I would still have a bad intake or idle air problem when the whole system is pretty much new and spark and fuel isnt a problem because it has new injectors and it has all new ignition including distributor.

I just want to hear what other people have to say because I know that the speed sensor is mounted into the transmission and I know i wouldnt be able to get under there and do it myself and a new sensor is almost 100 bucks here....but then again the computer tells me its bad when in park but when its in gear it doesnt throw any codes.

Maybe theres some B-type codes that my cheap actron code scanner doesnt read, it only does A-codes, ones worthy enough to trip the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light. But any and all help is appreciated guys, thanks in advance!

Re: bad Vehicle speed sensor?

There are no "A" or "B" codes for our systems. The ECM will either detect an error and set a code or it won't. There are no "Pending" codes on an OBDI vehicle.

Sounds to me like a vacuum leak, hence the high idle condition.

Code 24 is probably intermittent... I used to get that one all of the time after I swapped in my T5. Don't get it now, and I never changed anything. However, I would check out the VSS with your scanner, seeing as how the speedo is so weird and your car is outside the year limit for the speedo cable.

We're all OBDI, One, 1, here, Ace. Our cars were all built before 1993. OBDII didn't go into effect until the 1996 model year. Datalogging and scanning is primitive on our ECM's, and there are no graphical outputs as there are on OBDII systems. We don't have computer controlled transmissions (1994 in the F-body, 1992-3 in FWD cars), ABS, or body control computers either.

I have a 5.7L that is having the exact same problem... Code error intermittently saying bad VSS sensor! I dont know where to start. So a vaccum leak could trigger this code?

Re: bad Vehicle speed sensor?

In his case, the engine was also stumbling and having performance problems. A code 24 can be set on a car having no driveability issues.

If the code 24 is set in Park/Neutral with the engine running, it can be intermittent or a bad connection. If the SES light comes on when driving and the only code is 24, there can be an issue with the VSS. I never did figure out how I got my code 24 to go away. It just did so on its own, seemingly, and hasn't come back to haunt me since.

Re: bad Vehicle speed sensor?

I have this VSS error off and on for the last few weeks. I bought a burnt chip about two weeks ago and replaced the burnt chip that was in there that had the VSS disabled. I wanted the VSS Highway mode so I bought a new chip. Anyways after putting the chip in and rewiring the VDO programmable speedometer and a 16K Hall Effect speed sensor with a SGI Dakota Digital signal convertor. I am now getting a VSS code error every now and then. It only happens every so often. It triggered the code last night after driving about 20 miles on a drive hitting highway speeds I was going home and at about 20mph the ALDL light came on and in about a minute it went off. I had my programmable scan tool and checked the code within that minute. I am not sure why it is triggering intermittently like it is!!! All the equipment is new speed sensor, chip, ECM, ect… I even cleaned and reset the IAC sensor and ports and reset the ECU just prior to the drive thinking it was that. And disconnected the spark advance wire to the HEI and set the RPM to 500.

When I got home it was idling around 1400RPM, a little high… Not sure why? When I left after resetting everything and adjusting the RPM it was purring at 900RPM at rest.
Could it be a bad TPS or MAP? NEED ANY ADVICE!!!!!
