Looks like you've narrowed down the problem. With these cars, sometimes, it feels like chasing ghosts before you find the gremlin causing all the misery.

Re: 3.1l no start (still!)

My father made another observation this morning. Car would not start, moved the steering column and it started. Not sure if it was coincidence or if there is a problem in the column. I have my VATS bypassed with resistors under the dash, so i dont think the anti theft is the culprit. Is there anything else in the column that could cause a crank but no start condition?

Re: 3.1l no start (still!)

OK did some back probing. Here's what I've pinned down so far as definite.

TPS - Ground is good
Signal is 0.70 (at close) - 4.50v (at WOT)
Reference 5.02v

MAP - Ground is good
Signal is 4.81v at 0 vacuum, decreases as I suck on it with my mouth.
reference 5.13v

Re: 3.1l no start (still!)

more to add:

Removed IAC and remeasured, and it is at the correct length.
Checked for IAC signal at KOEO, and it is present.
Removing O2 sensor from exhaust did not change anything.

Further notes :
After extended starting attempts, the purge solenoid on the charcoal canister feels very hot, I don't think it's related or causing a massive vacuum leak because capping off the hose to the motor gave no change in condition.

Removed the vacuum tubes from the top of the throttle body and noticed there is no vacuum pull there, but there is vacuum pull on the rear of the intake? (The FPR pulls vacuum from the back of the throttle body)

Noticed that the oil pressure sending unit has been leaking oil for some time, ran the wiring diagram for that circuit, which runs through the fuel pump circuit, however my fuel pump is running properly and is testing at 44psi. Although my oil pressure gauge often reads near zero at idle sometimes, so that's a future fix.

Im about 2 weeks away from taking the camaro to a garage that has the older OBDI diagnostic scanner, maybe the data stream can shed some light. Either that or parting it out into my 87 project and get the v8 swap boogie started.

It's awful that I'm an ASE certified technician in Engine repair, Brakes, Steering and Suspension, Electrical Systems, and I'm hitting a brick wall here.

Re: 3.1l no start (still!)

I wanted to let ya'll know that the car is running but had to take it to a mechanic so won't try any more, I want to replace this piece then make up my mine if I need to sell it, now on a fixed income so money is tight and if it breaks down again then it will sit again. Can anyone tell me where to go to find this part.....I can't figure out how to put a picture here.. so the part is in front of passenger wheel and where nose fits on side about a foot below turn signal on side. I have no idea where to start looking, I've looked in junk yards for light motors and you just don't find these cars in there. Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Good luck with that mechanic. A lot of them have probably almost never even seen an OBDI vehicle much less worked on it. You'll probably spend a grand before he gives up and you're still stuck in the same boat.

The part you're looking for is either an air deflector (air dam/headlight protection piece) or the ground effect (commonly broken part).

Re: 3.1l no start (still!)

Thanks for getting back , I know it has nothing to do with the headlight , I do believe it's ground effects but don't know what that certain part would be called, I looked at one of the vendors here but what I saw didn't look like what I needed. Well I paid over 1/2 that which is why I won't be able to put much more into it, needs tires as these have been sitting long enough to start to dry rot.

Welcome to TGO. You should start your own thread so it's fresh. Explain all the symptoms and engine details with regard to what's old/new and any changes that may affect it.

Re: 3.1l no start (still!)

**Update**
After getting the car running with several replacement parts listed above, determined oil pressure sender had burnt area in harness, about 1 inch long from the connector up on the orange wire. Determined oil sender shorted. Replaced it along with fuel pump, strainer, and in tank harness.

and now she runs, and starts everytime.

But something is still wrong, misses at idle, clears up off idle but occasionally "hiccups", my catalytic converter is cherry red on the tail end before the car reaches operating temp, and my tach is showing idle at 2000-2500 RPM. I can tell by ear its running much slower than that. Bumping the throttle shows 5000rpm at what sounds like 2000 rpm.

I have the EGR valve plated off at the exhaust manifold and intake. Could this be related?
