Re: engine swap

Swapping a V6 for a V8 requires a lot of fabrication, rewiring, & time. If you don't have any experience doing it or a good friend who does, it will be a serious challenge. There are a lot of half finished project cars that have been sitting in garages & yards for years. If you want a third generation V8, there are a lot for sale for less than $3,000. Got a friend who found one for $900. Needs some work; stuff that most owners could do.

Re: engine swap

Swapping your V6 carb engine for a V8 carb engine is about the easiest engine swap there is.

Yes,..... Your Digital dash and all your gauges should still work fine after the swap.

The 84 cars use a Engine wiring harness and a ECM wiring harness under the hood. Remove the ECM & ECM harness from the car completely and the car will still run - and so will all the gauges. ( You would need to use a vacuum advanced Carb and Distributor after removing the ECM )

In 84 the V6 and the V8 engine harness is almost exactly the same. The only difference that I can recall is that a couple wires might need some additional length - or cut shorter. ( AC compressor wires maybe - I don't remember exactly ATM ! )

Don't forget that swapping to a V8 means that you will need a V8 Tranny, V8 radiator, V8 starter, and so on. (be sure the V8 Flywheel is correct for the year of your Engine - 1 or 2 pc RMS ). It's also a real good idea to install V8 springs in the front end so the car doesn't become "bouncy" in the nose due to the extra weight added by the V8 stuff.

If you need to keep the car to "factory" smog standards than your only real option is to install the factory V8 ECM and ECM harness and use a factory CC carb and distributor. In this case your best fit for the 84 is an ECM & ECM harness from a 84 LG4 V8. (** HO cars and 85-87 LG4 cars used a KNOCK sensor ECM system - this ECM & harness would also work for your 84).
