would like to mod my car

I recently bought my car a few months ago and i had some questions on modifying it.

i know that the 305 is frowned upon, which is what i have, and thats all i have to work with. The car is in fine condition and runs great.

i was planning on installing some performance parts like an intake manifold, rather mild cam, exhaust etc..., but a mechanic that i talked to said that if i plan on putting performance parts on my car, the car is going to not be very drivable and its going to be very expensive to up keep. His advice was to drop a motor in the car. Thats way too expenive.

I have never put performance parts on a car before, and neither does anyone I know, (they all drive rice-burners).

I would like to mod my car a little but if its not going to be a daily driver or its going to break down all the time then i guess i'll just forget it. The mechanic told me my car is probably going to go slower with the mods because the computer will not know whats going on.

Your mechanic is a moron. Sure if you go slapping on all aluminum parts and a radical cam, it may have drivability problems. Start with a free flowing exhaust, headers back, as this is one the weakest parts of the motor.
Do you have the LB9?
If you have an auto get a higher stall TC and some 3:42s. Then maybe do a cam swap.

I think the first thing you need to swap is your mechanic. He doesn't sound like someone with a lot of experience(at least not with doing anything right the first time).

You need to give us some more info on which specific motor you have(305's come in many flavours), what your budget is(you said an engine swap was too expensive) and what your expectations are.

Oh and you need to grow thick skin. There's a fairly vocal "Anti-305 Fan Club" here(to which I used to be a charter member), but there is potential in these motors. Tune-out the negative opinions, listen to those who have experience with modding their 305's and don't be afraid to check-out the archives.

Yeah your mechanic is living in the past( mid 80's), when thease cars were new and people would try to eliminate parts that they shouldn't and add wild cams that would hardly work in a mild carbed set up let alone a computerized fuel injection set up. Now adays they make parts that work WITH your computer to make power rather than confuse it.

i was planning on doing the edelbrock performer series with the carb, cam and lifters, and intake manifold.

I found a guy who will put on 2.5" true dual exhaust along with headers, hedman, 1-5/8".

I was going to rebuild my 700r4 tranny and put in an auburn 450 posi with 3.73 gears.

Also, i was going to go with wires, plugs, and ignition and MAYBE heads but doubtful.

Am i wrong in thinking this was going to work and not lose its drivability?

i have an 87' 4-barrel 305 and i think its an LG4 but i could be wrong.

I had the LG4. The intake sounds like a good idea. (I like the Performer EPS intake) I used a Performer 600CFM carb. A mild cam might not hurt like a PAW .420, .442 lift cam. You would also benifet with headers, high flow cat (or elem. it), and a smooth flowing muffler (like the hooker or even dynomax). If you do this you will have to use a Vac. advance distrubitor. Go with light springs in the dist. 3.42 gears would be both quick and very streetable. Later on all those parts will fit on the 350 if you decide on one.

or

Find a 350 block and order a rebuild kit from northern auto parts for under $160 (That has cam, pistons, lifters, everything you need!)
