Need Heads...recommendations.

I am going to be replacing my stock heads to gain some power and loose some weight. I currently have som old cast heads with machined 64cc chambers and oversized valves installed. I believe my sig has all of my engine info.

I am looking for the best head that I will be able to use and keep my camaro a street car with good potential at the track. What does everyone have, recommend? Money isn't really an issue.

Since money doesn't matter, I'm sure most will say get some AFRs. Do a search on here, by far the most popular.

I just ordered some Pro Lightnings 2.08/1.6 64cc 200cc iron heads. Won't be on for a little while though. $675 for them.

I thought that they used to be a division of air flow research but their quality control was so bad that AFR dropped them. That is what I have heard anyways ::shrugs:: For a budget aluminum head i think that the Trick flow 23* head is pretty damn hard to beat.

I never heard about them being owned by AFR. All I know is they're from Australia.

If you look in older magazine adds for AFR they have adds inside of them for PRO TOPLINE cylinder heads. That was pro action before they got the boot i believe.

No. From my understanding pro action used to be Pro Topline which was a division of AFR, sort of like how Weiand is a division of Holley but they dont offer the same products.

alum. or iron? I am leaning towards the aluminum over iron. Are there any drawbacks to aluminum.

Also, what does everyone think about Edelbrock Performer RPM heads? Are the AFR and Pro Action that much better, what about the SWorld Products line?

I can not seem to find alot of info on the AFR and Pro Action heads, any useful links any one knows of?

Search AFR on here. World Sports are good too.

Most steer clear of Edel heads.

Haven't heard many people who have tried the new E-Tec heads from Edelbrock. I'd like to hear about these heads from people who have tried them.

car craft just got 540 horsepower out of the E-tec 200cc heads with 11.5:1 compression, a performer rpm air gap, 1 3/4 headers and an enormous solid cam.

the e-tec heads dont impress me that much. their flow #'s are kinda lacking and the 200cc e-tecs require 1 3/4 headers, you cant run anything smaller on them.

Mark, do you have any of the stats and specs on the pro lighnings? I am looking into the AFR 190 heads now, how do they compare?

Aluminum will allow, perhaps even require higher compression ratios as they absorb more of the cumbustion heat. No glowing edges to spark preignition like iron. They're repairable, although not cheaply, and you know the weight savings.

Drawbacks? Don't let your girlfriend help you change spark plugs, start forcing those threads and you're screwed (no pun intended). The exhaust threads are heli-coiled though.

I've got Perf RPMs, I'm impressed with the quality and I could hardly get a set of iron heads finished to the state these are in for the price. Top quality machine work, S/S valves, screw in studs, guide plates etc. Just run 'em.

Compression shouldn't be a prob if I get the 64cc chambers as I should be getting 10-10.5 to 1 C.R.

After looking over their site, the AFR 195 heads are looking really nice. Looks like I'll have to take a 68cc chamber which will lower compression a little. I may add charger on top down the road so that would be ok.

Where did you buy yours from Mark? From AFR?

Actually, I won't be buying them till this weekend, don't have a credit card up here at college. AFR doesn't make them, they're goin for $730 shipped in iron though.

oops, forgot they are not AFR. They are very simialar to the AFR heads. Main difference is that the AFR heads are aluminum which I really prefer. I can't seem to find a place to buy the AFR heads from though. I'll have to keep searching. Thanks for all of the very helpful info everyone.

Heads

I have heard all good things about AFR heads. They have really good porting design and tolerances. They also are proved to flow very well.

I can get behind AFR's philosophy regarding their cylinder heads; high-flowing heads with a relatively mild camshaft makes mounds of torque right across the rev range.

They've cranked out some really impressive dyno numbers using camshafts that a lot of street rodders would call 'tame'.

Throw the big cams away.

Since money is no object why don't you check out GM's splayed-valve heads (p/n 24502517). At about $1300 each (not including tax or shipping) they are pricey. The 45 cc combustion chamber presents a problem if you want to run those heads on the street, but they are definitely trick.

The Brodix Track 1 is another good head. With porting they are way over 300 cfm.
