I've got the CD. It is a great tool when trying to "rebuild" a when some idiot has "re-engineered" your F-Body. It has all exploded views with GM part numbers. It is easy to use, Just like the web site. Uses a browser window and html links. It is easy to read. If it was scanned in they did an excellent job.

When I first saw these being sold on eBay it bothered me. Is anyone besides me bothered that this person is profiting from another companies copy written material? I realize a lot of effort went into scanning and burning the info from a 1982-91 Chevrolet F Parts and Illustration Catalog -17F. Doesn't the copyright 1990 General Motors Corporation at the bottom of every page he scanned mean anything? I realize this is valuable information that is of benefit to us all, (which is why I purchased a manual legitimately a few years back). But to profit from another companies copy written information isn't ethical or legal. Anyone have a CD already? I'm curious if there is any GM license agreement information enclosed.

I have a copy and I find it great. The exploded views of the parts and their listings are something that I havent seen elsewhere in a compact form. It keeps you from searching the world of GM and you find your answer to the breakdown of the part in minutes. I would also in the future like to have a Helms manual for the extra reading of material. The CD is well worth the few bucks.

10 Big Myths about copyright explained

It might refresh your memory to review the information on the attached site. The person or company manufacturing (I use that term loosly) this CDR is very mistaken in his interpretation of the "Fair Use" clause of the US Copyright law.

I thought thirdgen.org didn't condone anything that even resembled copyright infringement. The CD is a copy of the GM manual and is selling it for profit, smells fishy to me.

youd be surprised at some of the ways the circuit courts have interpreted the fair use clause. theres alot of shady stuff goin on lol. how a law is written and how it interpreted and applied by the court are seldom the same thing especially with regards to copyrights

Actually this is a very "gray" area when dealing with Auto manufacturer's maintenance information and copyright law. I heavily researched this, as I was planning on doing basically the same thing for the G-Body awhile back. Still plan to, just trying to find the time.

I talked to several attorney's who deal w/ copyright law and this is how the explained it...

The information was ORIGINALLY published for use by GM dealerships / service / Parts people so that they could order / find / maintain a certain vehicle with the correct parts. These manuals were NEVER offered for retail sale. So TECHNICALLY, anyone who owns a GM Parts and Illustration Catalog isn't supposed too, but ALOT do, as I do as well.

The lawyers asked me one VERY important question...

" Could the information contained in the Parts Catalogs be obtained ( without cost ) from other sources?" - Whether this meant the GM Parts counter, aftermarket auto parts sources etc.

And of course, that answer is yes.

They went on to tell me that in the REAL WORLD, if GM WANTED to use the copyright laws to sue, they could. But, they added that they never would, as the cost would squash any gain ( NONE ).

Copyright infringement isn't based on using somebody's else's work for PROFIT, it's based on using somebody's else's work PERIOD, where THAT use can hurt the value , income , etc of that author / work.

I AM NO COPYRIGHT expert, I'm just going by what a couple of lawyers told me. They gave me stacks of stuff to read, but you need a law degree just to get through the text leading up to the actual laws

Bottom line...he covered his butt with the statement on the CD / website. Which basically means IF GM wanted to stop him, they probably could, but I would wager they wouldn't get a dime from the CD's he's already sold.

Clear as mud?

yup, hes right....

copyright infringement doesnt depend on profit either, just like he said...however, the compensation that can be attained can change based on the type of copyright infringement and whether or not it was used for financial gain

Re: FbodyCD.com

Being a scanned material, I've noticed bits missing as well. If you've ever seen one of these manuals in person, they're ridiculously huge. There's a lot of content on the CD, but I doubt it can be as much as in one of the manuals.

I only wish I had my helm manuals in a similar format so I could dedicate my laptop to the Camaro and do all of my work off of there. I refuse to take the helm manuals to the car though. Don't wanna get 'em dirty.

Re: FbodyCD.com

You'd complain if he opened a new thread, and now you complain that he uses search and finds a thread where he's not completely off-topic.

Edit: This isn't directed at you, people would just tell him to if he posted a new topic. And he did search. I was just commenting that people complain either way.

That is TOTALLY what happens, if you search and open an old thread everyone says "don't you know this thread is old", if you start a new thread they all say "don't you know how to search". Why don't people just help if they can or not post? Lots of keyboard ***** on here.....
