NOS Injection? What do you have to do?
hey i have an 87 z 28 that is pretty stock but am looking toward a nitrous oxide injection setup and am wondering what i have to do to my car so the nos button won't be like a self destruct button. anything that has to be done first any help please.
well first of all I wouldn't recommend nitrous, because like you said you don't want a self distruct button. but if you really just have to have it, you need to check out your equipment. the block you have most likely has a lot of miles on it, and nitrous will add more quickly. From what I've heard, 1 shot of NOS=1000 miles worth of wear to your engine. So if you want to have NOS and keep the same engine awhile, I would have it rebuilt before you add NOS with lightweight but strong parts, and a medium-low compression(something in the lid 8's)Personally I like naturally aspirated motors, but it's your call there.

Because running NOS into the combustion chamber is like increasing the compression ratio drastically. It is extremely cold and as we all know cold air is much denser, thus packing in a lot more wallop than your regular gas/air ratio.

It isn't necessarily bad. Nitrous is pretty much the only power adder you can use on a high-compression engine.

I think you guys could be missinformed. A lot of guys on the power adder board claim their engines ran *better* after nitrous. This could be because the nitrous cleaned the O2 sensor a little and/or other carbon deposits in the engine. Nitrous has a kind of "safeguard" built into it as well. When the Nitrous-Oxide molecule splits into nitrogen and O2, the O2 burns while the nitrogen acts as sort of a "cusion" for combustion. The charge of air is cooled significantly as well. These things however cannot make up for poor set up and bad tuning. Full throttle switches are a good safety measure and the ultimate could be Jacobs Electronics' Nitrous Mastermind nitrous controller. For more info try http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...ysteminfo.html
Like I said, all the safety equipment in the world can't make up for poor setup and tuning. Know your car's limits and don't excede them. Keep in mind that this is my opinion and is not written in stone.

First I'd suggest surfing the Power Adder forum to see if this question has been asked 100 times before. Then once you have some fundamental knowledge of using nitrous, you may want to confirm some questions with NOS tech or appropriate comapny. Here is some additional reading that may help enlighten:

Nitrous will not ruin an engine (installed properly) Before you do anying you have to have a fuel pump to deliver the psi, second you MUST have a retard for your ignition, and third dont run it for more the a 1/4 mile or a minute, and keep an eye on you temp. Do your research!
