torque convertor stall question

alright. i was wondering.... my car travels at about 1650rpm on the highway at 65 mph with 2.73 gears and stock stall (1600). i was wondering if i got a 2400 stall if that would raise my highway rpm at 65mph to aprrox. 2400 rpm, or if it woukd still stay the same at 1650rpm. ????? thanx

Depends. If the converter retains the lock-up function it will be the same. Without lock-up, it will be higher--and create a ton of heat. At 3000rpm with a 2800 stall converter he had to be in a lower gear.

3000 RPM at 50MPH is about what I run when the converter is unlocked or if I am in "D" rather than "OD".

let's see you have 2.73 gears. he has 3.42 gears. that's why he runs higher rpm for the same mph. here's the math.

RPM=MPH x GR x 336 / TD

2319=65 x 2.73 x 336 / 25.7
2906=65 x 3.42 x 336 / 25.7
