roll cage question

Ok well i pulled the motor today and im gettin ready to drop the new motor in. When I was down at my friends shop he was talkin to him about sfc's. He custom builds them himself so we were just talkin about that. Anyway I told him that im gonna be having spray added aswell and he told me to get a roll cage( i planned on getting one anyway) but i dont want this car to have huge 10 point cage in it, i want to use a 8 point cage so its still looking somewhat nice since this is still going to be driven on the street. But I was checkin the Comp. Eng site about cages and they had the 10 pt cage saying MUST BE USED IN 10.99 sec and faster for NHRA AND NMRA specs. Does that mean i have to have a 10 pt cage or can i still use an 8 point?

Sounds to me like it "must be used" if your car is 10.99 seconds or faster.

Thats what i was thinkin but he doesnt say anything about the 12 pt cage so... For the 8pt it said NHRA and NMRA approved so does that mean i can use it no matter how fast the car is

No. There is a range on it. You must use 10 point cage for sub 11 second cars. Above that they have different restrictions. So I would think that if an 10.00 second care needs a 10 point cage, an 8 should do fine for everything above.

I don't know the rules of NHRA but that would make the most sense. Below 10.99 you need a 10 point cage. Above 11 seconds you can use an 8. I think that 13's and higher you don't even need a cage at all. In fact since I see cars that are in the 13's stock go down the track with no cage during an NHRA open event I would say that is the case.

Well, why don't you list your setup on here and we'll see if you are going to run 11's or 10's. It isn't as easy as just slapping a supercharger on your car and just going out and running 10's. When you add even an 8 point cage with sfc's and all that other stuff, you add about 100 lbs. to your car.

Ill list all the mods to the engine later, but we dynoed the motor alone on some crappy shortie headers and the stock tpi intake and the motor made 415hp without the charger. I have the Holley stealth ram and hooker long tube headers and a paxton supercharger and pretty soon ill have a 150 shot

If you're spending money on all of this stuff then why not spend the extra dough and get the 10 point cage now. It does not matter if you like the looks or not, if you want to run the car at a track constantly, you will need that cage to run, or you will get kicked off! Those are the rules. good luck with your decision

Yes that was my main concern was being kicked off the track. I just needed it clarified cause i read in some magazine about a 4th gen that did 10s wit nos and it only had a 10 pt cage so i was just wonderng.

NHRA track requires a 5 pt ROLL BAR for cars running 11.99 or quicker and it is legal to 10.00

IHRA track requires a 5 pt ROLL BAR for cars running 11.49 or quicker and it is legal to 10.00

---put some subframes in the car and make sure they are the tubular kind that also weld to the pinch weld on car and then install a 6 pt kit (you dont have to use the 6th pt but might as well) and you're legal to 10.00

****EDIT*****

i would just like to add that this IS NOT THE ONLY MOD NECESSARY TO BE LEGAL TO 10.00. There are a lot more but since we are just talking about roll bars here, this is what the rules are
