3 series 3.42 gear install question!!!!!

hey. I've got an slp takeout posi and 3.42 gears to match it. slp says the posi and gears will work on 89 and newer 7-1/2" 10 bolts. it requires 28 spleen axels which supposeably started beeing installed in 89 camaros/firebirds. (26 spleends were used previous years.) i was reading through my camaro performance book today and i read that it says that they changed to 28 spleen in '90. i need to know if my car is a 28 spleen or not. my car is an '89 iroc. I'm screwed if i go to get them installed and the car has 26 spleen axels. is there any wya i can tell without taking out the axels????????? thanx

One of the first things you need to know is what Rear End you have in the 1989 IROC now. Is it a 9 or 10 bolt??? If its a 9-bolt forget about the SLP take off, it will not work. Only other rears available in a IROC that year were a 10-bolt 2:73, which also will not work and a 3:42 which will if it has the 28 spline axle shafts. (which would be in question as 89 was the change over year. Some got them other did not.) Your only choice if you have the 3:42 rear is to pull one shaft and count the splines. Better to know for sure before ordering parts.

hey I'm not a moron. i wouldn't buy stuff for a 10 bolt if i had a 9 bolt. the 3.42's are for a 3 series carrier which i also bought from slp. I just need to know if the car has 26 or 28 spline* axels. the slp website claims that it will fit all 89 and newer 7.625" 10 bolts, but the guy i talked to when i ordered the stuff said some 89's didn't get blessed with the 28 spline axels. specifically, some of the early model 89's. i know mine was delivered on ocbtober 31, but that doesn't say much for build date. where can i find my build date??

I never said you were a M-----, but some people are. Build dates are on the white sticker on the driver side door sills unless its been removed. Otherwise pull the Axle Shaft for a spline count.

hey. no man, i wasn't like getting offensive but i've had a lot of peopla say that to me in emails, like i don't already know. not to sound like an *** though. lol. i did geta hold of my build date. it's 8/88. so probably the 2nd or 3rd month of production of 89 models. how hard is it to take out the axels????

How long do you want your car down for??? You will have to remove the housing cover, lose the fluid and the gasket for starters. Axle shafts are held in by "C' clips on the axle shaft ends
remove and the shaft should pull out. Wheel and tire and brakes (??) have to be removed also, so its no small or easy job. And I would bet you do have the 26 spline axle shafts. It might be easier to just buy or locate some 28 spline shafts and do the complete job at one time. Just a thought.

You are gonna have to pull an axle out. It really isnt all that hard to do so dont sweat it. Just be carefull not to bouce the axle off the seal and ruin it while your removing it.
