HEY BOYS!

Since the transmission fluid leaked...
I bought -BAR'S LEAKS TRANSMISSION "STOP LEAK AND TRANSMISSION!-

Does it work?

on the back it says "Leaks usually stop in 250 miles or 3 days, if leak continues mechanical attention is needed..."

I've always been told that nothing belongs in the transmission except regular ATF by every professional in the business.

If the transmission leaks, it needs attention now, not 250 miles later with some gunk poured into it.

it could be just the pan gasket or the output seal or any other easilly accesable part of the transmission. These are common things that cause leaks and don't require removal of and/or expensive repairs of the transmission. You should have the fluid & filter changed if you haven't latley, don't say anything about the leak, they will let you know if it's not the pan gasket. Just get a second opinion if they recomend some expensive repair.....and just say NO to AAMCO!

If you can safely get under the car, you can wipe away all of the fluid, spray over it with some cleaner and get back underneath to see exactly where it is coming from.

BTW, I don't know where you live in VA, but The Muffler Center on Holland Blvd in Va Beach is a great all around shop, very honest and reasonable. A + exaust work too.

A good transmission shop is B&W or something like that, on Mercury Blvd in Hampton, near Newport News.

That covers it for Tidewater, steer clear of Autocraft Body & Paint in Woodbridge, VA (near Alexandria)

Those clowns used a used white door on my dad's green truck and painted over it like it was.....can you guess what that looked like?
then I took it back and thier punk painter took it over a dip in the parking lot too fast and blew the front shocks.....is it any wonder I do all of my own work?

NO, NO wrong.....wrong......Gentleman, take it from me....don't ever let a woman know that you have the skills to fix anything....even your wife!

next thing you know...you will be called on to fix everything.

-the cars making a noise, can you check it out?

-can you help me hang this up?

-do you have anything that can fix this...?

-can you help me hook this up?

-....and the worst: what's wrong with my computer....?

I guess you'd have to keep it all a secret. Like: "yea, I took your car to the shop, don't worry about it.." "tools....what tools? That's a jack.....how did that get there?"

Its not just women, anyone who is mechanically challanged is liable to call on you for everything. At the shop i used to work at, I saw just as many if not more guys with stupid questions than girls. Hell at least most girls actually admit that they dont know much about cars. Guys have to act like they know it all and then they get pissed off when you correct them. Try some of these classic lines....

Me- So what kind of car is it?

Customer- Its Red

Me- Ok what year is it?

Customer- Its new

Me- Ill need to rotate your tires

Customer- Dont they rotate when i drive?

Me- Im just putting in the new oil

Customer- Whats wrong with the oil you just took out?

There ya have it

well that's true. Typically one would spend a great deal of time with or live with thier woman, so that's where I was coming from. I definitly didn't mean it at a sexist thing.

"Me- Im just putting in the new oil

Yea!....what was wrong with that oil!?

I can see him/her grumbling to thier friends:

"then he tried to give me some about viscousity breakdown and sludge......what a bunch of nonsense.....I'm not going to change the oil anymore....it's too expensive!"

my girlfriend seriously didn't change her oil for a good three years before I met her, there are still SOLID chunks of gook all throughout that motor. The breather filter was blocked completely...that car survived an amazing amount of neglect.

Yea, I gave them a chance to redeem themselfs, but they let me down again. The truck is in Texas now, so they won't get another chance to 'correct' the problem.

Thier excuse was: "it's normal to miss things on a big job" i.e. $9,555 worth of body and paint work, over a three month time period.

They have all kinds of credendtials in the area, but I didn't feel the love. Maybee they feel that insurance jobs don't count?

Most girls that are good looking prefer little econoboxes over a true sportscar.

They usually have other stuff to worry about, they just wanna get from point a to point b. At least thats the way all the chicks are around here.

Then you got the ***** that hang with the minitruckers and r|cers I know cause I used to be a minitrucker.... Had to get out of the game because of the r|cers.

Hmm. You guys keep drifting off topic. Not that I'm surprised. If I saw a cutie in THAT car, I would make a total idiot out of myself, as if I need and excuse.

A '91 5.7 Formula is pretty rare, and these guys are right, will become much more valuable in the next 5-10 years.

The port injected (like yours) Small blocks with roller cams I have seem with over 300K miles on them, as long as you don't overheat them and keep the oil changed. You'll probably have to go through the trans before that, though.

The doors droop and creak, window motor brushes go out, switches, little stuff, but the basic car and drivetrain will last a long time if taken care of. In my mind, the little stuff is well worth having a car with character!

...besides, if it ever seems boring, these guys will be happy to advise you on how to modify your little Formula into a road Pirihana.

Oh it doesnt stop there. You wouldnt believe the stupid things I made up just to keep them quiet. The sad part is, most of them believed me.

Customer- Whats that??? What does it do???

Me- Its a flux capacitor, it enables the time extender

Customer- What tool is that??? What do you use it for???

Me- Oh thats just my left handed ratchet, its for taking out those left handed bolts

Customer- What are you doing now???

Me- Rotating the secondary valves in your muffler bearings

Customer- Wow you sure know your way around cars

This is why most shops dont let customers in the work area ::

It's tough to sum it all up.

most important and simple: change the fluids.....all fluids.

coolant flush every now and then, flush the brake system, change the transmission fluid. use quality stuff.

change the oil...and use good oil, those $10.99 oil change specials won't cut it if you want 300k out of that motor.

fix problems before they become bigger problems.....be PROACTIVE.

when the drivers door sags, it's no big deal, after awhile it will wear the striker post and chip the paint at the bottom of the door...it just gets harder to deal with after that. $2.50 will buy the brass bushings at the GM dealer, most body shops will change them out for a fair price.

second major choice is REPAIR or REPLACE....

say you have your trans looked at and they offer to fix the leak(s) for $550, you may want to consider a rebuilt trans w/ a warranty for about $950-$1300 depending on where you go.

same with the motor, if you ever have major internal wear or damage, and it's got multiple problems like leaks and other worn parts, there is no sense in sinking hundreds into it when you can just put the money towards a whole fresh motor. by that time, you would have got your money's worth and have another motor with 200k to go. Most people think it's time to buy a new car when the motor or tranny goes, this is the biggest myth of all. There are several aircraft, ships and trucks, ect.. that have been in service for years. That's the way to get your money's worth, overhaul it again and again!

that's comforting to think of those passenger airlines that have been in service for 30 years. I'm getting on one this Sunday too

i gotta hand it to ya tho, those flux capacitors are a bitch to replace. and when muffler bearing valves go, you may just want to look into a whole new exhaust system.....

My car has 150,000 miles. And minus a few rust spots (just front fenders behind the gfx, not body damage) and the paint it old. It runs better than the day it rolled off the line. I just re-did all the brakes, front and rear, cables, lines, everything, Rear end just rebuild, new axles, new driveshaft, new tranny (rebuilt) engine just completed. My car is done except paint, but ill get that done eventually. And my car is PERFECT, mechanical wise.

Keep that car!!!! I have yet to see someone happy with losing a car. Xcept if its a stupid honda or something. But Chevys never die!!!

Hey guys,
Just drove my baby today, charged it up and she took off, PURrrrING. Everything seemed ok.... except the car DIED at an intersection (i couldn't help but laugh) a nice cop gave me a push out of traffic (boy was i lucky). Turns out the car MAY BE draining because the screws in the back of the battery were loose and the car wasn't charging properly.
My dad tightened the up the transmission gaskets (he said they were pretty loose) the leak hasn't continued since.

ANYWAY... my new question... is it hard to change a muffler myself with male help? it doesn't look TOO complicated.
let me know what you think

They dropped the 350 from the decal in 91 and 92, as for the muffler just invest in some goggles first.

And if you really wanted to try and learn everything there is to know about your car and be able to fix it...you could get a Helms Service Manual from www.helminc.com they cost about $90, but they are the same manuals that the service techs at the dealership use.

Ive personally never seen a girl in a 3rd gen. Dang, if i passed a cute girl in a 3rd gen......I wouldnt be surprised if i pulled the ebrake and "attempted" a 180 then gunned it after her.

Don't consider No.1 Auto of Stafford, Virginia, either. Very, very bad. Cooper Corvettes, Triangle, Virginia, is very good, but they are also expensive.

I believe the '91 and '92 Formula 350's did not have "Formula 350" decals on the door, just "Formula." However, the hood bulge had 5.7 liter.

Keep your car dominika. Give it proper care and feeding, love it, and it will take good care of you and love you back!

'78 Camaro Berlinetta, bought new, traded it in with 135k miles for an '83 Camaro Sport Coupe with a 4 cylinder ( What was I thinking!..oh yeah...I was poor and I got it for $5800.00 new..out the door..) traded it in with 180k ( new 350 crate motor at 165k )traded it in for an '88 Camaro Sport Coupe convertible 305 v8, 5 speed and parked it with 100k miles ( just started restoration) and in over 400 thousand miles in Camaros I have replaced 3 altinators, 1 water pump, 1 clutch........( I replaced the 4 banger just "because" it ran great when I pulled it out ) so these cars are extremely reliable if you take good care of them.

At the risk of sounding sexist....have a male friend (but not an ignorant one) take it in with you. Mechanics can and do take advantage of women when they take a car in for an unspecified problem or find "other things wrong" when they are working on their cars.

ITS A 13 YEAR OLD CAR!!! If it was a trans am i would say hand it over to me, cars that old get problems and its not like a radiator just invest in some used parts it will be cool. Me and my dad always role to the junk yard to get parts for his ghetto a$$ caprice.

Hey StreetRoc. Don't forget that every good mechanic has a set of "metric" pliers in their tool box, and that every good service job includes topping off the blinker fluid.

First off hello, and wow, just because ur a girl doesnt mean they are ignorant. here in houston i see more and more females and guys with 4 gens, woman love cars just as much as we do. u recently found out that girls poop. Astonishing!

anyway where was i, just because you are of the opposite sex doesnt mean a thing. just be sure to be educated as much as you can before soliciting any mechanic work.

I like your car almost like mine but my Bird is black.

if it's got a 5.0 id get rid if it as i'v had nothing but bad luck with them.
as for the 5.7's they seem to last better for me maybe i'm too hard on the 305"s
ps mufflers are easy, just as long as you dont mind having rust and crud in your eyes
In 1991 and 1992, there was just Formula on the doors..

KEEP THE CAR!!!
I've now somehow managed to talk my fiancee into wanting a 3rd gen...lol...told me the other day that a 3rd gen 'maro painted Vivid Blue Pearl was her "dream car"! sweeeeet!

Really....the best thing to do with any 3rd gen is to keep it and fix it. I used to work with a guy who also had a 3rd gen with one side of the front bumper just touching the ground and one headlight broken and some dents and dings in it...and he loved his car just as much as any of us do. :hail: :lala:
