short runner long runner

im just wandering what you guys think im building a 406 for my 89 iroc the motors never going to go over 6000 the short runner intake mini ram lt1 etc makes alot more power but its all upper end the tpis big mouth slp runners will put me a little more in my rpm range but being a 406 im going to have alot of tork anyways ie hooking up maybe an issue lol going to be an issue so would i be better off losing the tork and taking the horse power gain? ps if i was to go with the long runner are the tpis large tubes worth the money thanks for any info im kinda stuck which way to go

if your not going to go over 6000rpms, TPI long tube setup would be fine. AS&M makes a nice big tube runner like TPIS but for abit cheaper at like 400 bucks or so.

but the miniram wouldnt be a bad choice either.... you will have plenty of torque with that 406.

one common belief is that LT1, minirams dont make torque on the low end. they make plenty.....and the curve is VERY flat, so its a nice power band. TPI makes good torque but it tends to be abit more peaky than the LT1 short runner intakes

and it all depends on what cam your gonna be running... a cam for a TPI setup might max out around 5000rpms, maybe more like 4500 in that 406, and will make a ton of torque which makes a fun street car. but the right cam in the miniram will still make bottom end torque, and the extra HP is nice bonus. i'd take that extra hp.

TPI might make the faster 1/8 mile car but not by much. the miniram combo should run the faster last half of the 1/4mile and thus run a bit quicker, all things being equal, such as same heads/cam. but the miniram has great potential for power in those bigger motors

traction is gonna be an issue with either choice tho.... nothing a full bolt on suspension and some drag radials or wide soft street tires wont fix.

good luck with your decision

i think a 406 miniram can make nice power with comp cams extreme energy 224/230 or better yet the 230/236 cam. the smaller would be very streetable and make nice power down low. the bigger would fit the power band of the miniram nicely i think. all depends on what your lookin for.

that 406 will make alot of power down low so dont worry about the miniram. the miniram on a 305-355 motor is where you start to loose the low end somewhat.

If I were you I would go with a Holley steath ram.

I think SuperRam or a Stealth Ram would be the better choice. There was a guy around here that was pulling 9's with a 400 NA SuperRam combo.

the mini ram is way overpriced in my opinion, but it does work. i would also reccommend a stealth ram or a LT1 intake conversion. they are cheaper and will make the same amount of power.

Mini-Ram

Hi,

As to the Mini being over priced , I agree, But, what I like
I can run a straight front strut bar across the bay and not
have to worry about hieght issues.

Have run Mini on a 350 and 355 with mods and was really
impressed by performance after pulling off Big tube runners
and going with the Mini.
No more starting to lay down after 5300 even with the Big Tubes.

Going to run it on my new 502HP Dynoed 383 and with the light
valves, AFR Rev kit,Titanium retainers ect, motor will get up close
to 7 grand with Mini and be pulling.

IMHO would be perfect for the 406 setup.
Would help with to much torque down low although even with
the 350s I didn't notice that much change.

Just a thought

Later
