MSD or Mallory
MSD or Mallory
I'm tryin to decide what box and distributor to buy the MSD street fire HEI distributor and 6al box or the Mallory 85 series distributor and hyfire 6al. just wondering what everyone thinks about this stuff
Re: MSD or Mallory
just to upgrade really, i have the stock HEI
----------
just to upgrade for the most part, the HEI on my camaro it pretty old. i have some extra cash so i think an upgrade would be a pretty good idea

Unless there's something wrong with your distributor now, you won't see any real benefit to upgrading. If you still want to though, just get a ready-to-run distributor and forget the ignition box.

Re: MSD or Mallory
On the other hand, I bought a 6-AL from MSD and I could tell a diff. It was in my Malibu that was hard to crank, and the 6al cleared it right up. But , it's ur money, do what you want ......

Re: MSD or Mallory
The only diff is name really. Other than that is preference..
Like me, My setup will be MSD Dizzy, MSD APS Starter, MSD Alternator, MSD Coil, MSD Wires, MSD Box.
I just want a badass ignition. My brothers car wouls start in a split second...so delay whatsoever and all he had was coils and wires.
P.S. I've noticed many older guys/girls too like Mallory....many new age kids or 16-27 year olds like MSD....thats a little survey thingy I made. So basically its just preference.
My bad but MSD has a better RED too.

Re: MSD or Mallory
Not really. They are in fact different internally- that's not to say they'll perform different- but the specs differ quite a bit.
And price.
MSD is just getting so popular that it's all the kids know exists. I'm skeptical to buy MSD because I feel like their products are overpriced and too many reports of "random" failures. I'm sure it has to do with so many being out there, and probably improperly installed, but I'm still leery of them.

Re: MSD or Mallory
msd IMO is much nicer of a setup than mallory, although if your stock HEI is working properly and you're not running boost or nitrous then I don't see a reason to upgrade. Maybe get a coil and some nicer wires and call it good.

Re: MSD or Mallory
MSD has been on my '90 IROC during TRAXION's ownership as well as mine. It's been trouble free for my 3+ years.
But, like Apeiron and xpndbl3 said, you don't need to upgrade unless you just want to.

Re: MSD or Mallory
Look at the Mallory site at their box's and they show a comparision between the Msd. I have an MSD "ready to run" distributor and coil and soon will be adding the Mallory box and Moroso 40 ohm wires. MSD came out with their boxes first then accel and Mallory has just refined it some. Their boxes you don't have to have a different rpm modules if you want to change. Just turn the dial. The Multistrikes only work below 3500 RPM. Stock HEI modules only allow the timeing to advance to about 4500 RPM. Aftermarket modules continue to 6500 RPM. Its all in the money you want to spend, But have fun while spending it, you only live once!

Re: MSD or Mallory
I got a 6AL, billet distributor, blaster coil, and accel 300+ wires and I could tell the differance immediatley. First of all my car will start wherever and whenever in a split second. My car also revs alittle higher and it sounds better. I love MSD and would reccomend it to anybody. All of this ran me about $700. For me my car was running like cr&p, and now I'm impressed everytime I start it.

Re: MSD or Mallory
I really like the msd system, the only thing I have seen is some problems with the msd distributor. I've seen a few cars around here have their msd distributor crap out on them within the first couple months. I am also looking for a HEI upgrade like this as my 383 hardly cranks with the stock system. I have heard great things about the mallory systems too. So I think its more of what you want because they are just about identical kits.

Re: MSD or Mallory
i have heard msd is the way to go but thats just what i've heard advertising and from kids. one of my older friends runs a mallory unilite dist. and it works fine. the only thing i have to say is stay the f*** away from accel i've had nothing but trouble form them and mr gasket. products. they are cheap. i know mallory is made by mr gasket but i honestly havent heard any bad things about their products. just not as many good things as msd

Re: MSD or Mallory
Ok...first, to be honest i didnt read every post...so dont flame me if someone else has said this. It's been my experience though...(we've never tried mallory really...don't know why)...ne way, i can't see why i'd ever buy an msd box, because i've seen them fail times 3 in a single weekend, and i mean 3 entirely seperate msd boxes. Granted, this is under some extreme condition, but it just blows my mind to think that a person can spend that much money on an ignition box and have the damn thing quit from revvin to high for to long, or some rough terrain. For my money, that type of s*** better last, or you'd better believe a customer service rep is gettin an ear full! As i said, this is running a load of probably 7500 to 8500 rpm frequently, but come on, what are they made for. (sorry, that sounded somewhat liike a rant)

I run a Mallory Hyfire box on my '85 Z28, it completely cured the high-rpm misfire I experienced with the stock HEI. It also starts much easier when hot.

Re: MSD or Mallory
sorry to sort of jack this thread but what all do you need to make a msd box work? A friend of mine offered to sell me his 6AL box for $25, just wondering what else I would need to make it work.. thanks

Re: MSD or Mallory
To everyone else...anyone heard of Nology spark plug wires? Ive seen there demonstration and it's clear they have one hell of a hot spark. but i would like to know if they make a diffrence power wise in an engine. at 300 bucks there not cheap but i think it's probably worth it. website is www.nology.com

Re: MSD or Mallory
I'll also chime in here.. I bought an MSD SCI-L used probably about 3 years ago. Since then, it has been used on two vehicles both of which were driven daily. Never had a failure with it. I was thinking about buying the 6A for a firebird I'll be acquiring shortly but when looking at the specs, it matches EXACTLY with the SCI so that makes me wonder...

Re: MSD or Mallory
ok i rounded up the money for the msd digital e curve and it works awesome. i set it at 12 degrees base and with a quick curve the car ran so much better and smoother. i used the msd blaster 3 coil with it as well. the product is very well made. their craftsmanship shows, and is much better than accel.
