ESC question?

since i have put a 350 in my car do i to switch out my ESC(electronic spark control module) for one that applys to an 5.7L along with the appropriate knock sensor, i was told that the computer wont properly retard the timing if the components arent right, but watching my timing on the scanner it advances and retards accordingly and i havent had any signs of detonation or "knock" he says the computer wont pickup any knocking if the module and sensor arent for a 5.7l ? has any body run into this before? as far as i knew the only difference between the 5.0 & 5.7 computer's for the same year vehc. was the chip...any body ..anybody?

I swapped out my 305 for a 350 last November and I still have my stock ESC. And up until a couple months ago I was also using my stock 305 knock sensor as well. I didn't notice any ill effects with either of them. The only reason I changed my knock sensor was because I pulled the old one to drain the coolant while I was swapping my heads and cam and decided to put a 350 sensor in rather than reuse my old one.

In fact, I'm even still using my stock chip and my car runs great. I'm almost positive I'm robbing myself of some extra power but as for drivability I have no complaints whatsoever. I've got a custom chip on it's way so we'll just how much of a boost in performance it gives me.

Yes - you need to swap your ESC filter (knock module).

I was doing some PROM tuning on a buddy's car who switched from a 305 to a 350. He was using the same knock module and was experiencing an increased amount of knock over an entire WOT run. After switching to the correct Knock module the knock decreased dramatically.

A good example applied to 4th gens is when the 4th gen guys switch to an LT4 knock module. Less knock.

I just did an engine swap two months ago, and I was running the car with the stock chip, esc, and knock sensor. I didn't have any problems with the setup except that I wasn't sure how to set the static timing at first on the newer cars. Once I did that, the car ran better. I called up Hypertech and I found out that with my setup, a different chip would get me some better performance. I prodded them for the GM chip # and went to the dealer and ordered that for the car. The car had some more *****, but I also had to change out my injectors. I guess what I wrote all of that for was to say that it isn't neccesary to change the spark control unit...

If you have any questions, drop me an email.

quickL98, I am moving this to the General Engine forum. I think more people could benefit from this post in there.
