New here, basic question
New here, basic question
heya I'm new to the Third Gen club i guess :P im thinking about buying a particular 1986 Camaro z28. It had a 305tpi and the last owner replaced it with a 350tpi. I'm not sure about the exact power rating, ive heard from one friend that this car will haul *** because of the 350. But from another friend i was informed that it wouldn't be too fast, because of the car is so freaking heavy.
any enlightenment on this issue? There was also a cam upgrade once the 350 was put in.

Re: New here, basic question
that just depends these cars varied in weight from just over 3200 lbs or so to more like 3800lbs so options makes a difference in speed so did the rear gear ratio so on.....
basically i dont consider any car fast unless it can cut 12s on the street but, they are mildly quick, you should run a low 14 if it isn't overcamed. Definetly can beat 85% of people around my area stop light racing at least.

Re: New here, basic question
awesome, thanks for replies. In terms of speed I'm looking to hit at least 300 horsepower, maybe 320. I'm going to replace spark plugs, and I don't think there is any exhaust work done so ill put in new headers/manifolds/muffler, and probably put in home-made cold air intake. I've never owned a V8 anyone have an opinion on what muffler brand sounds the best/gives most performance on something like this? something not too expensive.

Re: New here, basic question
flowmaster is good but so is magnaflow... The thing about the 350 is that you can build it to be a very very strong engine then add a supercharger or nos
Re: New here, basic question
ya I've of course heard great things about flowmaster, and magnaflow, definitely would consider putting it on this car. also looking at getting Hooker heads and an aluminum drivetrain. for stop light racing, and 1/4 mile, should i get the full length headers?
Re: New here, basic question
turns out the car has full flowmaster exhaust from headers to muffler, except for the cat which is a magnaflow. drove it yesterday, was definitely a beast. only thing im worried about is the service engine light, the salvaged title, and the fact that the whole car was basically put together by the seller's brother.
havnt made my decision yet. if i do buy it ill post pics for u guys.

Re: New here, basic question
well third gens basically weigh about the same. a 350 however will give more power to the same weight that the old 305 was pushing. sounds like a pretty sweet ride! the check engine light is probably nothing. if the car is running pretty good, the its probably a result of them changing the engine but the computer is still thinking 305. the computer is set for stock, so when u do performance mods, it may come on. i just ignored it by putting a black piece of electrical tape over that light. even tho it was on, my car was running better than before!
