Crate engines?
I plan on swapping my 305 C.I out with a bigger crate engine and saw some great 383 C.I engines with 470 crank HP
for around $4,300. i cant seem to find any better deal for a new crate engine with a warranty any suggestions?

Re: Crate engines?
A LOT more bang for your buck if you build it. Just grab a friend that has done it before and have fun. It feels great knowing you put together the beast running under your hood.

Re: Crate engines?
You can save a lot of money if you do it yourself but you'll need to do research to make a really good combo. And if you buy a crate you'll usually get a warranty.
Balance it out
Crate:
Higher cost
No time invested in parts research
Warranty and implicit guarantee of parts condition
DIY:
Lower cost
Research/time needed
risk of junk parts, failure etc
But the cost of having a machine shop assemble you an engine usually isnt extremely high and can still be cost competitive compared to a crate but there's a lot of variance in quality and expertise if you let them supply parts for you. You'll still usually be better off putting the time into research. I like my machine shop a lot, good guys up there, but they wont warranty a motor they build because there's just too many unknowns when you throw together a lot of parts from unknown origins, even new parts can fail.
Really to me the biggest advantage of a crate is a warranty. The biggest disadvatnage of DIY'ing it is when you spend all your time piecemealing it together and gettign into one big lump and dropping it in the car, and then your block cracks or your heads crack or you lose a cam lobe etc etc.

Re: Crate engines?
LOOK NO FURTHER.
I know of a site where you can get a remanufactured 350hp Chevy Gen I 350 with 400lbs tq, COMPLETE ENGINE with a 12,000mi 12 month warranty (or a 36,000mi 36 month warranty for $250 more). It’s called www.cmengines.com.
383 Stoker for $500 more (425hp 500+tq). They have 450 and 500hp Versions. The 450hp version runs $4500 witht the 12,000mi warrenty. The 500 is like 6 grand so I'd go with the 450. Once again, these are COMPLETE engines. You can get just the block or whatever too, but the complete engine is only slightly more expensive one worth the money to have it done right and completed with a warrenty.
Anyway, if you’re curious, look at street performance engines.
People who have done business with them here have nothing but positive things to say about them.

Re: Crate engines?
Even when just looking for some info I had some positive exeriance. Email them and they'll give you all the information you want on any engine and more. The engines they build are very reliable and like I said, everyone I know who has done business with them loves em. One guy here bought a 383 stroker from them like 10 years ago or something like that, and it still runs perfectly to this day. And yes. Excellent Prices.

Re: Crate engines?
I don't like the pricing. New ZZ4 with 350hp and 400lbs tq from them is about $5,300. A Gen I Chevy 350 (thats pretty much the same) with the same Dino results Sells for $2,995 at www.cmengines.com.

Re: Crate engines?
Make sure you see what parts are in these engines....lots of companies are using cheap chinese junk for parts... Low price doesnt mean better.
Re: Crate engines?
I think crate motors are the way to go unless you have the skills, the talent, and the tools to fabricate a quality one on your own. With a GMPP crate motor for example, you have a part number for every piece that can be cross referenced and you know it will all work together. In 1996 I put a GMPP crate 5.7 in my Camaro and it was the best decision I've ever made.
Re: Crate engines?
If you're looking for a GMPP crate engine we have them available on our site for much less that most competitors. You can find them through the link below. We have Gen I engines as well as LS engines available.
