third brake light bulbs
I need the "correct" third brake light bulbs for my 89 iroc.. The break light is in the "original" spoiler.. Parts stores are selling me the wrong ones,, they don't even resemble mine at $7.99 per bulb.. How can I get the right bulbs for my car.. Tired of parts stores giving me the wrong ones and telling me they are the right ones.. Are these even available anymore ??? Are they a special order ??? There are no junk yards around here that have any third gens anymore so trying to get bulbs from there is not an option....
Thanks Melissa
Thanks Melissa
Re: third brake light bulbs
If you have the two wire prong bulbs you can get replacements at any Radio Shack. The p/n is 272-1177 and was $1.99+tx each. When installing, DO NOT touch the bulbs with your bare fingers. The oil from your skin will result in early failure of the halogen bulbs.

Re: third brake light bulbs

I have been buying those bulbs for my car since I first found out that Radio Shack carries them. Not disapointed yet especially with the price difference from that of the auto part stores.

The bulbs are a 891 and you can get them a ORilleys for around 3 bucks each i just bought 2 new ones the one at radio shack are like 50 watts and the 891 is a 10 watt bulb they are cheaper at radio shack but if you are in a lot of traffic they may overheat

Re: third brake light bulbs
The only ones I can find and I mean the (ONLY) ones are radio shack ones with the 1172 number. I believe they are 20 watts,, I'm not comfortable using a 20 watt if the car calls for a 10 watt... I have the bulbs with the 2 wire prongs on them..I have looked everywhere and have been to every store trying to find the exact bulbs........
Mirror Image,,,, can you help me out here ???? I need all 5,, I'm gonna change them all at once.. Are you talking about the 891's ??? I bought those at Auto Zone and they're listed on the receipt as "Sylvania Halogen Fog Bulbs" #OOO798 891....They didn't fit,, the prongs were shorter and the bulb was different.....$7.99 for one !!!!!

Yeah I have never had any problems with mine but it took me some time to find the one that came in the car and you have a good price on them next time I need some I know we're to go I have to order them when I need them because they don't stock them at ORilleys it's good to know you have the 10 watt ones

I'm installing all 5 20 watt bulbs and keep the brake applied for 15 min or so then I will aim my heat radar gun at it and it will tell me the exact temp those bulbs are at.. I'm still probably gonna want those 10 watts that you have anyway !!!! Thanks for helping !!!

I not sure if your car has the light that is outside the car if so make sure you're gaskets are good that seal the light bar from the lens I had 2 on mine that blew the first time we had a hard rain I take mine and clean them and use a clean rag to install so I never touch the bulb with my hands

Re: third brake light bulbs
My cheap trick..... I was at the local store that has everything and picked up landscaping bulbs that were 10 watt. Normally 5.99 per pair but closeout price of 2.49. And they actually had an 891 in the auto department, but not in my cart at 6.99.
If you really want to go nuts; and melt the plastic, the Sylvania 2017 bulb is the same size and cranks out 50W

Re: third brake light bulbs
The plastic housing had gotten so hot with the original bulbs it began to melt and the bulb contacts got too loose to hold the bulbs securely. I used a cutting wheel to remove the bulb housing from the red lens, epoxied in a 12" led circuit board with 20 LEDs and glued it all back together, haven't had a problem with bulbs burning out since.
The circuit board cost $5.00.

Re: third brake light bulbs
It took me forever, but I found an LED direct replacement bulb from a website www.focalprice.com.
It came from China so it took like 4 weeks to get to me, but they are super bright and fit in fairly well.
They are a little wider than the original so I took a drill bit (1/2 inch I think) into each hole and in 3 seconds they fit like a glove. I am not a big mod'er, this was easy.
SKU is ER0729W they are $4.39/each ($3.58/each if you buy 5) but they are really bright and I like that they stand out especially since I have a black "CAMARO" cover on my 3rd brake light.

Re: third brake light bulbs
Last year I replaced my third brake light bulbs with the 20 watt ones and I just had one of them overheat so bad it made a bubble on the red cover lens and now it has a bright red color where that bulb was (very noticeable),, how can I fix that without getting a new one ?? I did not sit in traffic for a long time with the brake on so I am surprised that bulb did that.. I took that bulb out but the other 4 are still in, I am taking them all out and am never putting 20 watt ones in again !! These are the sylvannia 12V 20 watt bulbs.......There are no wiring issues with this car and never had a problem with bulbs until I put in these !!!! That bright red spot on the light cover is pissing me off,, any ideas on fixing it without buying another one ? It is the original one and I'd like to keep it...

Re: third brake light bulbs
When I swapped my bulbs out I had thought of the 20s as well; until I realized that only 2 bulbs would generate the same amount of heat as the lamp was designed for. If this was an engine compartment it would be like stuffing a rat motor in where a 4 pop was without upgrading the cooling system
Don't feel bad though; a dozen years ago police departments all over the place were having problems with the strobes they were putting in their taillamps melting the housings. I've also seen where the filters inside of their lightbars were actually charred due to the heat coming off of the lamps
Most likely the only way to fix it will be to replace it. I really don't think you have too good of a chance to polish it out. Would really need to see it to see what kind of options there are.

Re: third brake light bulbs
Thanks Mad Myche !!!! that red spot is about the size of a dime !! I don't think it can be polished out either as it has already formed a small bubble,, only other thing I can think of to try and fix it is maybe getting a small paintbrush and applying an identical red color on the inside of the cover over that spot,, some kind of paint for plastic or even fingernail polish..
Really sucks that happened,,, over a damn bulb !!!!

Re: third brake light bulbs
Sorry to bring back this old thread, but the bulb is any 12v lamp with a G4 base. They have them at home improvement stores if there isn't a Radio Shack in your town. Typically used in outdoor landscape lighting, and also LED version available(if you don't want to put a board in). They run about $5 and some change for 2. 10w is recommended.

Home depot sells a g4 l.e.d. bulb so I'm going to buy and see if it works.

Lon, any chance you can get t3, g4 style l.e.d.'s to replace the halogen bulbs? 20 watts would be great.

Re: third brake light bulbs
I've used 194 or 168 bulbs with no problems. These are the extremely common ones available just about anywhere (even Wal-Mart). They were used all over car bodies for many, many years. Dash bulbs, turn signal bulbs, convenience lighting, etc. The metal wire pins are bent over on the bulb body, so I just bend the wires straight out and insert them into the light bar. Works great, plenty bright, and cheap.
