OER IROC Hood From Summit
Has anyone tried one of these hoods? They are dirt cheap,(200 plus shipping) and I am always wary of too good of a deal. Summit usually has good stuff though. They claim great fittment, but who is going to tell you their stuff is crap?

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
Because I don't want to step out and look at bad gaps and misalignment every day. Kind of a pet peeve of mine, it would drive me nuts and I'd just have to replace it. Can't find a decent OEM within 200 miles.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
If your afraid to tweak or modify a part to get a proper fit you shouldn't be looking at aftermarket parts. Everything I purchase needs some work to fit correctly. How's the thirdgen crowd up your way? Non existent here.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
A couple problems with that;
1 If GM still made hoods I wouldn't be looking at repros
2 Some repros are beyond "tweaking or modifying" to get a good fit
3 I can't find a good OEM hood that someone is willing to ship, as stated, which would be my first choice. Although I live in WV, I dont own a truck and cant get one myself.
Had to edit that out, apologies,. Only 3G member I've seen in the state and I cracked off wise to him.
Just saw the first part of your statement and it kinda ticked me off. There are no options other than a repro it seems.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
you don't have any junkyards in your area with a good hood or a friend with a truck? i hear the JY's out in WV are pretty decent when it comes to thirdgen parts(who am i to say, i don't live there lol), just wondering about this.
as far as for the reproduction hoods, i haven't heard any horror stories, but if you go on google and type in "site:thirdgen.org (insert keyword here)" you come up with all sorts of stuff, im sure if you use that feature(works better than the built in search feature for me atleast) you should come up with someone who bought one, waiting for someone who has it to catch your thread could take a long time

Checked every JY in the area, none even have one I can tell them isn't good enough LOL. Amazing, I know. Have a friend with a truck, even a few, But we're talking 250 miles away as far as the 3g crowd goes. I'll have as much in gas as the cost of that repro minus shipping. AND owe my friend a favor.
Nice tip on the querry, The site search engine really does suck

OER makes good stuff, but yeah, anything aftermarket may require a little body work to fit prefect.

Going with a color not even offered to our cars when they were made. GM laser blue metallic. In for paint and some quarter patches now but the guy is not at all speedy. understatement of the year. So I have a few weeks to work something out. He does good work though.

IROC Part Out thread
The hood from this car is nice. No corrosion, minor blemish that is easily repairable on the front top part of the hood near the RT front corner.

Thanks, I've seen that hood. Have someone willing to meet me 75 miles from me but waiting on pix. That's in SC, too far to go for, and seller won't ship.Thinking about the OER if it's a no go.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
First try. epic fail. Fed Ex rolled the corner on the hood. Was packaged well too. Bubble wrap in 2 layers across the face of the hood Foam pads all around the hood edge in a box. Padded outside of first box and in another box. Still brutalized in shipping.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
It's been a long time coming.(just set the doors and fenders last week) After the frustration of 3 tries, there was one hood I did get with acceptable shipping damage. If there is such a thing.
It appears to be almost 3/16" short on the overall length from front to rear. My stocker has been beat around on the corners so I cant be sure, but it still is that much longer. If I could get someone to give a measurement from thiers it would be great. The summit hood is 56-3/8" from tip of the rear corner to tip of the front, laying the tape along the top of hood following the contour. I'll try and get some pix today.
Although I had the hood here for over 2 months, Summit stood by their word and and is sending to have it picked up for replacement or refund if they are all the same length.
Pending further info from Summit, I'm gonna have to say this hood will look decent enough if you don't mind splitting the 3/16" it is short to both ends. But it is not an OEM fit. I personally believe I am going back on the hunt for an OE hood.
Furthermore, It is nearly impossible to have body parts this large and heavy shipped without some sort of damage. Unless the packaging is totaly armored.
Reaper, you live close enough to the Ga. Summit you can drive there without a hood and test fit it in the parking lot. Save $100 on shipping and not worry about the whole shipping mess. If you do this, bring the latch bar and safety catch, because it does not have them.

I checked with the police about driving my car without a hood including on the highway and they said no law against it so that's what I did. It was only 70 miles so I called them and they said when I got there they would help me put it on. It took about 5 min. and it is a perfect fit. Its a Goodmark 2in. steel cowl.
If you do this than be sure to bring the hood latch striker that's on the hood to use when you get there.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
OK, this is just getting silly now. Summit decides to send a fourth hood. This is the worst yet. Literally folded in half at some point in its journey. It just is not possible to ship a hood and have it get here in useable condition.
I busted out laughing when we got it out of the first box. "No need to unwrap it further." I honestly have a much better hood than three of the hoods I got from a car that was rolled.

picked up a black iroc hood off of craigslist a week or so ago for $25, picked up hood louvers from pick & pull for about $20, 2 cans of spray paint/white, scuff & go, the hardest thing was to swap hoods by myself, don't do this!!!! I've been burned by freight damage so I choose to deal local, best of luck w/your ride

I have 2 hoods I'm looking at getting rid of. 1 is a cervinis ram air hood, and the other is a 4th gen SS style hood. I'm in Princeton WV. Both hoods are in excellent condition and lined up great on my IROC. Let me know if u are interested.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
I gave up on the Summit hood. The only one that was close to useable was almost 3/16" short on the length from rear corner to front corner. Otherwise, it fit well. Maybe I'm too picky, I expect a hood to fit and not get beat to crap on it's way here. Waiting on a GM hood from thirdgen customs on TGO/ this week in camaro on facebook. May wind up with the same shipping nightmare that I have had for a while now, IDK. Frankly, I'm disgusted with the whole thing. Car has been apart for 3 years and I'm hoping to drive it before winter sets in. Getting the body painted and together. I'll run without a hood if I have to. Give me a chance to display all the shiny parts that go unnoticed.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
Chiknhawk, thanks for the offer, but I am looking for an Iroc hood. No offense but IMO the cirvinis hood is almost as ugly as the Daytona, I'd say a close 2nd. The SS hood doesn't flow with the lines of a 3rd gen. GM got the look of the car right straight off the assembly line if you ask me.

Picked one up from Summit, looks really nice. It is made in Taiwan, and seems lighter than the OEM one. Took a picture of the sticker on it.
I scuffed the ecoat on the underside and shot epoxy, then stripped off the top and epoxy'd. Looks nice.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
I'm interested to see how it aligns. The one I had received (that was even worth fitting)was a little short on overall length. Post pics of the four corners of the hood when you get it mounted if you don't mind.
I wound up getting another hood after the one Jason sent me was damaged. (props to Beths91camaro for driving it to me 4-1/2 hours away) This was an original hood and I can tell you, you are better off fixing an OEM part than buying a repop. The fit is perfect and the steel is much heavier gauge.

Just FYI I ordered the hood from Summitracing and it was freighted to me and trashed as well. Looked like someone had walked all over it. At first Summit refused to exchange saying since I wasn't there in person on delivery that I had taken all responsibility for it's condition.
I argued for a long time before they finally shipped a 2nd hood, didn't bother picking up the first. The 2nd hood was better, but wasn't 100%. It has taken a lot of aligning to get 'right' and still is off a little bit. I wouldn't go through it again.

Re: OER IROC Hood From Summit
I think it looks good. Nice job on the alignment. I'm sure it will look even better after it's painted.
I have to wonder why it seems that almost every hood that's bought and shipped shows up damaged. It sounds like a packaging problem as much as carelessness from the delivery service.
