Gear drive
I am debating on putting a timing gear drive in. Any reason I should not? And also how to tell the difference between a gear drive for a roller style cam. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Gear drive
I think this is posted in the wrong place. I dont think you can run a gear drive for a tpi. The noise makes the ecm think there is knock.

I guess I left out an important tid bit... I just did a carb swap. I just don't know too much about gear drives and I thought I would ask.

Re: Gear drive
If you want a noisy one for the cool sound go for it.
Otherwise I would stick with a good timing chain.
Some say gear drives are bad, may transfer harmonics to valvetrain.
I have not seen any serious engine builders use gear drives in a long time.

Re: Gear drive
if you're running a solid roller lifter mega-lift and duration cam, I use them, but other wise, no, not to "just use one"

Re: Gear drive
I use. them. even with EFI. i use the Quiet ones. you dont hear them.
and i have my ecm set up to retard 0.0.. I always used Pete Jackson. out of biss now. part # 327-C.
you can get good ones still.just get the Quiet ones. yes i also run full mech roller cams as well. small ones in the 254 dur at 50 and just under 620 lift.
good street cams.
dont buy into that nonsense about harmonics. with a 1/4 car/eng.
if ya do..go get a belt drive..and let the belt fail...and see how ya like that
just me I like them...the last one still looked new even after 6 years of beating on it.. the only thing i wanted to replace was the cam button.
and thats cuz i wanted to...just me
. a timng chain be a bit more. and not 100% after 6 years of drag racing...but with chains ya just toss them in the trash every few years anyway..
after all the V1 T Trim. Makes the same sound as a cheap gear drive..
