performance chip
performance chip
I just bought a 1987 Trans Am GTA with a 350 5.7 TPI engine. I was wondering what the best performance chip would be for it and where I can get it..
thanks a lot.

Personally, I believe in burning my own. But if you are not inclined to get into burning your own eprom, go to Ed Wright at Fastchips.
I have seen a lot of the actual code (BIN files) for almost all of the "off-the-shelf" eproms and frankly, they do very little. A little extra spark at the lower midrange of the high load area, possibly increase the locking speed of the TC a few mph higher and alter the temperature that the fans kick it. That's basically it.
However, Ed Wright actually makes a lot of changes and does quite a good job for a "formula" eprom. At least he gives you what you think you are paying for.
But I am still in favor of burning it yourself. It seems intimidating, but it really isn't. Just a bit of a learning curve and then experimentation, practice and a little patience. Then you can do anything.

try hypertech at www.hypertech-inc.com
I am very happy with my Performance Resource chip. With the cal-pac, it cost me about $200 and took a good .3 off my 1/4 ET, only other mods at the time being headers and cat-back. Visit their site,

I second Glenn's recommendation. Off the shelf chips like hypertech or jet do very little for what you're paying them.

I got a hypertech. IMproved my 1/8th mile time very little if at all. But I believe it helped my car a lot in its driveability and its consisitency on the drag strip. Before installing I would run anywhere from 9.1s to 9.9s in the 1/8th. SInce installing my worst time has been 9.22. The K&N air filter could have been the difference though. I paid 180 bucks for the chip. My car is consisitent now, but it still cost a 180. Maybe it could have been spent on something else.
