First mods
Just got my IROC-Z 3 weeks ago and fixed where it needed to be fixed. Now I want to put some mods on the car just to bring it back up, I conceder then as maintenance mods plus small amount of power mods.
I made a small part list from Summit Racing to start with. Can you all help me please? The red line is $400.
KNN-33-2008-1: AIR FILTER X 2 - $51.90
MSD-8435: DISTRIBUTOR CAP CHEVY - $24.95
MSD-8410: ROTOR - $4.25
MSD-31459: WIRE SET - $62.95
HYP-128822: COMPUTER CHIP THERMO - $179.95
HYP-1000: POWER STAT 160 DEGREE - $7.39
HYP-4026: FAN SWITCH - $42.95
Any help is appreciated.

You could save yourself $110 if you took the chip off that list and added the slp chip, currently on clearence at slp's website. I believe it is slponline, but not sure. They are going for $69 right now. Then take your pick of air foils from $35-60, and have some money left over to go to the hardware store for parts to make ram air scoops. Just my opinion, but good luck with whatever you do.
the jet fan switch is like $3 cheaper, and you get the a 160 thermostat for like $4 from your local parts store. and also think about instead of the fan switch buying everything to burn your own emproms for like $200. you can control your fan turn on temps with that. all the switch is for is a backup, which in turn swtichs it on if you don't have a new chip.
I agree with skipping the Hypertech chip, as well as going with a JET fan switch instead of the Hypertech fan switch. I'd also get a chip burning setup instead, but not everyone wants to or enjoys that type of thing.
Don't forget the coil.
Don't forget the coil.
Have you done the "free mods" yet? Here's some of 'em to help you on your way:
- Pull the plenum and grind out the EGR humps (Ok, you have to buy the gaskets)
- pull the base intake and siamese it to about 3 1/2 " down ( again gaskets)
- Gasket match the plenum, runners, and intake (see above)
- Advance the timing between 8 & 10 *
- Up your TPS voltage to .65-.75
- If you have the MAF set-up, yank out the screens
- you can make your own fan swith ($5 for a toggle switch and some wire) and save some cash as well if you can live without the auto engage feature.
Also, check out the post on this board about e-proms. It made alot of sense to me. Spend your money else where first, like on an AFPR ($50, a good tuning tool), air foil ($40), headers ($250 and up) or scout the classifieds for some good deals on used perf. parts.
It's all about gettin' these motors to breath, so think in those terms.
Hope this helps,
JD

I would get everything you need for a good tune up; i.e. plugs, cap, wires, etc. Then pull the intake off both upper and lower and do some simple porting. Behind the throttle-body remove the lip you can see in the intake plenum. Buy yourself a good AFPR and bump the fuel pressure up to 46-48 psi's. Then you can take the timing and raise it to about 9-10* BTDC. These are all simple do-it-yourself mods that you can do in a weekend and for the most part do not cost all that much. You are wasting money on a chip!

I wouldn't go with the 160 stat if you're ever gonna want to use your heater. I got a 170 from GM for like $7. Worth the extra couple of dollars so I don't have to f*ck with changing it twice a year. But if you live where the heater isn't needed, you might not care.

My $0.02
Another "free" mod would be to cut out or gut your air box, the thing your dual snorkal latches onto, when you lift that up you'll see it's pretty heavily restricted so I would clear all that out just make sure to check it periodically for debris, like shopping bags
That way your K&Ns or whichever filter you decide on going with actually get a nice rush of air
Next I would hold off on the chip for now since most only advantage of an aftermarket comes with a modified engine/intake and since yours is basically stock or all stock motor I don't think your going to see much "bang for your buck" from that mod. I would probably try your local automotive parts store for the cap and rotor just make sure you get the ones with brass fittings. Also don't forget you want to change the spark plugs as well as the wires and cap, maybe you already have since you stated you have done the "normal" maintence items. If not add that to your list. Next I would check all your claps, fittings, and hoses to make sure you avoid or catch a potential nightmare with a hosing dying out.

IAC and TPS adjustment
To adjust the IAC and TPS, look in the Tech. articls board under Carbs/ FI. The article is titled IAC and TPS adjustment. Good luck and happy hunting!
