Vortec HSR combo ideas
I've got a set of SDPC-modified vortecs waiting to go onto my Camaro, and I need a matching intake and cam to finish the job.
The shortblock is a 355 with forged flat top slugs. The car has a T5 with 3.42 rear gears. I don't intend to upgrade the trans until I grenade the T5, so in other words, right after I get the new motor in.
Anyway, I'm planning on the Vortec HSR, and I'm trying to find a cam that will best suit my application. My goal is mid 12 second timeslips, but I want very good driveability and street manners so that I can drive it to work sometimes, and take it for a ride whenever I want. I'm looking at the Voodoo 60103 (227/233 .489"/.504" 110 LSA). How's this cam look? I have an old non-roller block and I don't want to spend the money to convert to a roller cam. I'm also trying to decide whether to stick with stock 1.5 rockers or upgrade to 1.6. I'd rather keep the budget down and use the stock rockers, but since the lift on the cam is a tad under what I'd like, I thought a set of comp stainless 1.6 would compliment it nicely.
Ideas? How's the cam look? Anything else I should consider? Oh... I keep hearing that the Holley AFPR is a piece of crap. How's the non-adjustable one? I can change fuel with my chips, so I'm not real worried about having an AFPR. I just want one that's consistant and reliable.

I am running pro topline vortecs, and I am using an comp XTREME flat tappet that has similar lift number but less duration. I am also using 1.6 comp roller rockers. Almost left this out,, it has a 112 LSA
It has good power, unfortunately I am running a modded TPI and I must say that the power is nothing to wright home about. (that is about to change look at my "fuel rails??" post) My combo runs out of breath at about 5800, but it is really docile, and can light them up.
I think 1.6's with your cam will pull a good deal out of those heads.

The voodoo cam you mention would probably be alright with 1.5 rockers with the heads you are using the 1.6's will be a little too much lift on exhaust, but with the 110LSA you are probably gonna need to burn many chips to get it to idle right, also be sure you have the correct spark plugs for those heads (read my POST) Just some food for thought. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/alte...rformance.html

Depends on how low he would like it to idle. I have tuned many 730 on various intakes 110 LSA usually lopes nicely at about 900-1000 RPM. If you have a wb capability it will idle down nicely although it will be rich, and require a little clearing before taking off
, but who doesn't like to do that. That is a little much lift on the exhaust, but there are several ways to mitigate that without spending excessive dough.
1. Look at running 918 behive springs with short valve seals.
2. Several companies make a tool that fits on your drill and allows you to shorten the valve seat.
3. Run longer valves and shim up the springs.
