HSR first road trip

Last Friday I took the Camaro on a 185 mile round trip to pick up my little girl for the weekend. Open 4 lane road with cruise set at 70 I was only able to get 16.? mpg. Everytime the cruise would kick in it was like stomping the gas so I know better milage can be had if I don't use the cruise. When I was on the 4 mile of 2 lane that is 55mph the car would try to buck a little when little or no load was on the engine. I have had this problem at 70 mph before and after playing with the SA I ended up with 20 to 22 degrees advance at low load levels under 2500 rpm. If I went with more advance the problem got worse.

Over all the trip wasn't too bad, the new engine didn't run near as smooth as the old 350 TPI with a 270/276 Crane Cam.

More tuning to come after I find a way to make sure my WB is right, right now I'm not too sure about it.

Mixture is too rich.

Not enough advance.

Lean it out, especially cruise, then throw a ton of advance into it.

Re: HSR first road trip

I advanced the hell out of it and it didn't help at all, thats why I went the other way. WB shows 15 to 16 afr light load at 70 mph. I think its too rich also, thats why I want to check out the WB. My Wb is the old DIY unit I built a few years ago, I have no idea how to test it short of going to a shop with a dyno to see what they show.

Also, from a dead stop I can nail it and leave a cloud of black smoke in the air but the WB only shows 12.5 to 13. I think its time to send a little $$ to Moates and get something I know is right.

Thanks, Dewayne

Hi,

I think the WB is shot. Rich conditions don't like a ton of advance. I think the first step is to lean it out..

Your WB also might be suffering the effects of overlap.. When I had a bigger cam in '05, my wideband was pretty much useless.

Lobe separation is 113, I think its the WB, never was too sure about that thing anyway. I think I may go back to closed loop and see what the blm's do untill I get a new WB controller.

Thanks for the input.

Re: HSR first road trip

I have a little less cam (212/218) but getting about 16-17 in town and 23 or so highway. Did a lot of tuning though. I think I'm running a lot more advance too, maybe 30+ at 1500 and LV8 of 70-90 or so. Check my specs but this is a T5 car with 3.27 gears. Runs mid 8's 1/8 mi and high 7's on juice!

Re: HSR first road trip

I have made a lot of improvements over the past couple weeks.

Below is a copy and paste from my thread on DIY prom which was posted on 10-15-2008

Update on my tune,
Yesterday evening I took a 250 mile (round trip) road trip. the trip out was about 50 miles interstate at 70 mph, then I turn onto a 2 lane road and ran anywhere from 45 to 60 mph for around 30 miles. Next was about 15 miles of 25 to 30 and start/stop. The ride home was mostly interstate at 75/80 mph.

After 9 stops to tune I am very happy with the end result. I ended up with 22.1 mpg for the trip with lean cruise afr between 16 and 17 and normal afr between 14.2 and 15. Still have a small amound of jerking at low rpm, very light/no LV8 below 25mph but its much better than it was.

This mornings cold startup was also much better after adding some fuel to the startup area.

I'm now back at work for my 4 days of 12 hour shifts and as soon as I hit my 4 days off I'll start tuning WOT to get ready for the track

Re: HSR first road trip

[QUOTE=anesthes;3898249]Hi,

I think the WB is shot.

The WB was fine. When I got the new LC-1 I also got the O-meter to go with it. When I hooked everything up I figured out my problem. The O-meter and my laptop do NOT show the same afr. All this time I have been tuning to an incorrect readout. I still don't have the Datalog right on the laptop but I used the O-meter to dial it.

With any luck I will get some track numbers soon.
