Re: mini ram question

I run a HEI distributor with internal coil. It is a little tight between the cap and the corner of the passenger side fuel rail. A little filing on the outside of the cap took care of it.

Yes, otherwise it would not work on corvettes.

See attached picture.

Why? It is less reliable than a small cap.

Re: mini ram question

Wider spark spacing especially when dealing with
higher volt setups at higher RPM.
Street setups, not worth the trouble. No gain.

Has been written about and documented.

I'd run one to with my MR but don't want to play
games to do it.

Later

On the large cap (electronic) the wider spark spacing means a voltage drop, especially with guys that run damn near 40 degrees advance. I don't see how that could ever be a good thing.

Not to mention the large cap HE coil has a higher dwell time than small cap, which makes it not helpful with higher revving engines.

Re: mini ram question

There is nothing wrong with running a stock small cap distributor with high RPMs.

I have the miniram, small cap stock dist and turn 7500 through the traps. No break up, pulls hard.

Re: mini ram question

yeah solid roller 248/248 615/615 lift on a 110 lsa pulls hard in the top end.

miniram loves cams with same duration intake/exhaust. I may step up to a high 250 ish cam soon, but having a lot of fun with the 248 for now.

Re: mini ram question

Fastbird - Last year I ran a single pattern solid roller 242/242 .603 lift on a 112lsa. The motor pulled hard and overall I thought ran well. No ET's though.

Over the winter I went with a dual pattern 4/7 swap with 238/244, .608/.615 on a 110lsa. I could not believe how much the personality of the motor changed with the dual pattern.

Overall, it out performs the single pattern at every rpm. Prior to installing this cam, I was 100% sure that the single pattern was best matched with my cylinder heads as the intake/exhaust ratio was high 70% to mid 80%.

Not trying to discount anything anyone said. Just my experience on my motor. All in all I think the MiniRam with a solid roller is absolutely killer!

Re: mini ram question

Good info!

Do you have track times for the dual pattern cam? What made you decide to go with 4/7 swap?

I am shopping for a new cam and this is great info. What is the rest of your setup?

Re: mini ram question

Fastbird - I do not have track times. I can tell you that my previous motor a 383 MR ran 11.61@118.

If sop means anything, the 406 and new cam feels like mid to low 11's. This is my opinion with no documentation.

I went with a 4/7 just based on some things I read and a local engine builder. I think the combo of the aggressive ramp and high lift makes this motor rev up like no other. I really like the tighter LSA of 110 instead of my old cams 112.

Re: mini ram question

My cam is on a 110 also. I have semi-track times. I have a 700r4 in there now. I know better than to manually shift that kind of trans at high rpm so I just leave it in D and let it shift itself at 5000. I have 4.56 gears in the rear. That coupled with the low first gear of the 700r4 really make for some good short times.

Shifting at 5000 leaves a lot of the table when the cam makes power from 3500-7200. Even so, it ran 11.68 @ 116. I'll have the TH350 and 5000 stall in there for the first race of 2009. Also adding s-10 manual steering, electric water pump and ditching all the serp system. Hoping to pull off an 11.0.

I shift mine manually and I lock up the torque converter at 5500 in second gear. The motor takes on a whole new personality above 5000 rpm. I shift at 6600-6700.
