Super Ram

anyone have an uninstalled SuperRam or maybe even stock TPI. I'm getting oil in my pleanum, fouling my plugs and blowing smoke. Compression test was fine all between 194psi and 201psi. I'm pretty sure the oil is coming from the PCV system. I took off the SR lid and have oil on it floor.. I see to small holes in the floor of the pleanum right behind the throttle body. From what I can see they Y together and head as one in the direction of middle bottom of SR pleanum. I'm thinking they goto a runner then to the lower intake then to the hose leading to the PCV on drivers side. Can anyone confirm this for me or post a pic of the under side of the pleanum??? Looks like I need better baffles in the Valve covers

Re: Super Ram

traced out the PCV system as much as i could with out breaking the SR down. From what I can tell it looks like my baffles are to small in my valve cover and I'm pulling oil from my drivers side PCV to the lower intake and it crosses the lower intake then comes up the rear passenger side Runner then crosses under the pleanum and heads towards the throttle body area on the pleanum and comes through the pleanun floor via the 2 3/8"-1/2" holes. Then my oils going down my runners into the cylinders.

Re: Super Ram

I get the same thing. I was told that it comes from the overlap of the cam. I have baffles in my covers too.

how enclosed are your baffles? It was pulling oil really bad when I had no baffles, then I ordered rubber gromet baffles that were kinda like a barrel with a small hole at the bottom but the filled faster then they drained. Next I replaced them with small sheet metal baffles. They were kinda small like 1 3/4" by 1 3/4" and sat 5/8" off the top of the valve cover but were open on 2 of 4 sides. Just barely blocking the PCV gromet area. Today I went to a metal shop and I'm having them make me up a baffle.. 3" from top to bottom and 1 3/4" wide. Still 5/8" from the mounting point on top of the valve cover in high. I also will have it closed off on the top and 2 sides, hoping this works. If it doesn't I'm just going to order an inline oil seperator to put between the PCV and lower intake. I'm sure this oil mist in my fuel mixture isnt helping

They are the stock ones inside the valve covers

I'll post pics but its prob more a valve cover-baffle issue then a SR issue

Re: Super Ram

so after cleaning oil out of pleanum I installed my larger baffles. I then ran the car with no PCV system hooked up, took about 30 mins till the oil cleared and all smoke was gone. I then hooked my PCV system up and after about 10 mins it started smoking again. I pulled off the lid of the SR and I see some oil has returned to the pleanum. So I'm thinking I'm going to have to put an in line oil seperator on the drivers side and I might just add a breather for the passenger side..any ideas?

Re: Super Ram

still working on this issue. I was getting blue smoke only after the car was idleing for like 5 mins. No smoke while driving. Have a few oil fouled plugs mostly on the passenger side. I was thinking it was oil buildup in my lower intake from poor baffles in the Valve covers. So I got better baffle and installed an inline oil seperator. I'm thinking I stopped any new oil from getting into the lower intake but it still had oil that got in earlier. So I sprayed some starter fluid into the pcv hose in the lower intake to try to wash it out, but from what I have read it seems there is only vacuum there at idle and almost none while driving which would make sense why its taking a while to burn off and not smoking when i drive it. So I opened the SR lid again today and the floor of the pleanum was wet with oil and the runners were wet too.. I pulled off the pleanum and then the runners and good size puddle of oil spilled out of the runners..So I cleaned it all up and hoping I got it all. From what I'm told it can only be getting oil in the combution chamber a few ways
1)BAD RINGS--- I did a compression test and all 8 came back between 194 and 201( i didnt do a leakdown test but not blowing blue smoke while driving)
2) INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET---possible, would happen more at idle do to increased vacuum, but dont see how id get oil into my upper intake
3)VALVE STEM SEALS-----They are all brand new and my smoke isnt just on startup and again i dont see how id get oil in upper intake
4) PCV SYSTEM------ seems to make the most sense, Id get oil in my entire intake and more so at idle do to increased vacuum
what do you guys think??? Should I pull the lower intake or just be happy with all the oil i found in the PCV and runners and put it back together???

Re: Super Ram

There's is nothing wrong with you motor. I've been getting the same thing for 15 years in 3 different engine combos. Put some miles on the engine and check the oil often. Enjoy the car and don't worry too much about it. The problem is the overlap of the cam.

Hey Bro, do you get that with the 280 or is that with any cam? you pass smog even if your burning oil?

I've gotten it with a ZZ9 cam, Lunati 280, and 280XFI.

Do this. PCV on one side and a filter breather on the other. Do not connect the throttle body line for fresh air intake to valve cover like stock setups do. You will get oil that way. I never ingested oil with a breather and stock PCV valve setup. I had HSR and a much bigger cam (high overlap).

A filter inline is always a good idea as well or a baffled non vented catch can. Does your inline oil seperator have alot of oil in it?
