Need Cam Advice for 406 Single Plane EFI
I have a all out race solid roller cam that I may opt to use later, but I would like to get used to the car with something less radical and be able to drive to track. I plan on running E85. Gonna run PPI Super Hurricane unless someone talks me out of it. Motor was built to spin 8k, but would like to limit it to 7.2k or so. Just want to be able to drive to track and to work a few days a week.
406 / 5.7 rod / 11.5:1 CR / t-56 / ladder bars / 4.10s / 3400lb est weight
Phase VI Bowtie Heads 190cc
Current cam was .640/.609 lift so valve clearance not an issue. CamQuest rec'd a XR280R or XR286R. I am not opposed to having a custom grind made. Keeping solid roller for now.
Thanks in Advance

I imagine you want to keep lift around 550 to avoid going backwards with flow, but I suppose that also depends on the duration and ramp rate of the cam. CamQuest usually works ok but doesn't seem to take compression ratio into account. Some combos I've 'designed' with it, would explode in the real world.

Re: Need Cam Advice for 406 Single Plane EFI
Those iron vortec heads? 11.5 to 1 on E85 may be doable but still gonna need a hefty cam to do it. Heads seem alittle small for a 406 but can work. May need more cam to pull rpm on that setup but can happen.
I'd talk to a custom grinder like Mike jones, Harold Brookshire, Bullet cams, or similar or even Chris Straub. That will be most optimal.
My friends 406 car ran a TPIS 242/242 solid roller and ran very well with AFR 195's. He now has an Ultradyne/Harold Brookshire grind around 248/254 I believe with mid .600 lift but his heads flow to over .700.
I'd send your motor specs with those head flow numbers to one of the big cam grinders and see what happens. I think E85 can get you almost a point higher compression capability over 93 oct pump gas, but dont quote me on that. The cooling effect of the alcohol really helps fight detonation so if the cam is right it should do ok but will be a nasty street motor. Probably pretty loud

I have a very similar set up to yours. I have a custom ground solid roller on my 406. I am also running a single plane but it's an Edelbrock.
Check out Lunati Voodoo Solid Rollers. My cam is similar to the 267/273. If you're looking for more duration, go with the 273/279.
I cannot say enough about the cam I have. The idle is lopy but very stable. Overall driveability is excellent and the throttle response is amazing.
My recommendation is to keep a tight LSA. Go for max lift and not necessarliy duration.

I agree with these specifications: 248/254 @ .050 with .600 lift on a 108 lobe seperation installed on a 106 ICL should work well and pull to 7000 RPM.

Im thinking heads are smallish for what your doing. Just wondering why the 5.7 rod and not a 6? just pickn your brain...

Re: Need Cam Advice for 406 Single Plane EFI
Motor was built a looooooong time ago. At that time there really was not any large intake port aftermarket heads out there. I am going to run them for a season and then later get something else. I really just want to run it as is atleast once.
THere are no markings on the rods so I am assuming that they are 5.7. Only way really to tell is pulling one out to measure, but a friend and I did our best to guess. I err on the low side.
Not really economic to change rods and pistons out at this point. Just gonna run it into the ground for now.
I emailed Mike Jones and he thought that the current cam would not be too bad for light street use. He rec'd if I wanted a little milder:
R76424-77424-110
255/258@.050",
.424"/.424" Lobe Lift ~.620
110 LSA
.940" Base Circle
I have to talk with him again. I was looking at an even less aggressive one like the Howard or Lunati shown below.
All I know is that the current cam is 15+ years old technology and everything from pistons to cams to heads have come a long way since then.
I am not sure how happy the motor would be with the later two and it the lower duration would be extremely counter productive. Thanks for the other cam advise below. I will check into those #s as well.

Re: Need Cam Advice for 406 Single Plane EFI
Graebz - Take a look at the adv duration compared to the @.05 duration. This will give you an indication of how aggressive the ramp is. My cam has a 30 degree spread between the two just as the Lunati. The duartion @.050 on my cam is 238/246. Sounds small right? Not! Throttle response is incredible and the motor pulls past my redline of 7200. I really need to watch the tach beacsue it revs so quickly that it's easy to go 7800.
My chaice would be the Lunati.

I do custom grinds for just about anything, let me know of I can help.
Thanks
