Re: Holley sniper

Well actually I was trying to make a new post and my computer spazzed on me and when it finally posted it was for some reason under this post and not even on the board where I was trying to post

If you see the edited by

that was me noticing what happened but for some reason I could not get my comment t to delete so I just edited and had to actually use 2 charters or it would not allow the edit

so I simply said following

I then went back into the other board and posted my original post

but hey whatever

Re: Holley sniper

I know, accidental bump on an old thread, but I'll give some input

I have the sniper on my new engine. I am very happy with it but only at the beginning stages of understanding its awesome capabilities. I initially used it as just a TBI efi for about 2 weeks and 100 miles with the distributor controlling engine spark and timing. then I converted it over to allow the sniper ecu to control timing. this is great for just average driving and whatnot, but i wanted to fully use the sniper to help my high performance engine act as a high performance engine. So I did a ton of learning online, but the biggest help I got was when another member on this TGO board put me int touch with a professional tuner who really knows his stuff. I am in Nj and he is in TX, but we do everything via internet and it is just great. he built a base tune and after several revisions the car is running really great. Just today I had a 4 hour class/conversation with him where he is helping me understand the EFI tuning process much more so that I can start to make changes (properly) and look at my own data-log files and get everything really fine-tuned. the sniper is great. probably one of the very best mods I have ever added to the car.

Re: Holley sniper

My turn to bump this thread.

Installed the Sniper Quadrajet on my 83 305, replacing the "computerized" Quadrajet carb (with 160k miles). Of all the mods I have made to the car, this has been by far the best. Even better when I added Holley Hyperspark distributor.I also have it controlling the two electric radiator fans.

I followed recommendations on the Sniper FB group and set the base displacement to 10% less (about 275) and added some acceleration enrichment. After about 100 miles with the base map, the car has never ran better. Accelerates well, cruises smoothly, starts when cold, runs 190-200 degrees. Most important, there is no more smell of raw fuel!!! lol

I am just now getting my head around the tuning software.

If you have an early carbed thirdgen, I highly recommend the Sniper Quadrajet. Do your research and do not be scared by the slagging on the Sniper groups.

DISCLAIMER: I only have 100miles on the install, do not consider this a long term review.

However, if you are considering the "master kit" here is my experience:

- the cast holley fuel pressure regulator is garbage, mine started leaking at 30 miles. I replaced with an Aeromotive bypass reg, pricey, but has worked really well.
- the Holley inline external fuel pump is not that great. And it is impossible to install near the fuel tank on third gens. I mounted it low in the engine bay, near the old mech pump, just to get things working. It works, but I would not trust it on long distances/warm weather (vapor lock concerns), and I never let the tank get lower the half full. I will be replacing the fuel tank with an in-tank submersible pump and regulator soon.

and, as always, your mileage may vary...

Re: Holley sniper

My bump lets get more info out there. I converted from an edelbrock carb last winter to sniper EFI. I am still using my MSD distributor will upgrade to hyper spark later.
My motor
1979 350 + 0.030 bore
~9.9:1 compression
185cc intake Vortec heads with 64cc combustion chambers
XE274 Comp Cam
1.6 Comp Roller Rockers
Edelbrock RPM performer manifold
Hooker 1 5/8 headers
Walboro 255lph in tank pump

Last winter I replaced my edelbrock 600CFM 1405 with a Sniper 4bbl. I tuned the edelbrock using an A/F gauge and vacuum gauge. I modified a stock TPI pickup to use the sniper system and added the walboro 255lph pump.
First impression was hold crap this thing starts easy and idles well ASAP. Then I quickly realized I could no longer drive the car without burning out or burning some clutch so I added a progressive linkage allowing only 2 of the 4 throttle blades to open under 40% throttle. The only thing I had to tune was cold starts and cold driving (coolant temp under 160F) most of what I had to do was increase cold idle speed and add some cold fuel.

Impressions from the summer and about 2K miles
Holy crap so much more power.
Sweet + 4MPG
I love how this thing starts.
Wow it idles smooth
Why did I wait so long to do this.
