My Alternative build

I had a mini ram and looked at everything current available. Nothing out there fit what I was trying to accomplish. So I worked this hard and I think it will result in what I'm after.

Will it clear the stock Camaro hood or will you be using a cowl hood?

stock hood. It's about 1" shorter than a HSR.

Re: My Alternative build

I'm running the HSR and this is what I have considered. Look forward to hearing how it works. The only "complaint" with HSR is some distribution issues. Seems it runs rich in the rears during cruise but WOT power is great. Let us know how it runs. Looks fantastic. I really like using the air intake in front of the radiator and one of the reasons I stick with HSR.

Why did you abandon the Mini Ram? What 4bbl intake are you using?

I went with a Motown manifold mainly because I read people said it doesn't work with the elbow. I do this for a living and I like a challenge.

I work them hard. Both the manifold and elbow.

Will you be running wasted spark or adding a cam sensor in the distributor for sequential?

I was going to use the holley wheel a few years back when I converted to a 36-1 trigger, but it spaces all the pulleys out which I didn't like. Ended up just welding a DIYAUTOTUNE wheel to a stock crank pulley. Cut the center out of the wheel and slid it over the pulley then welded it.

That intake really came out nice. Good job!

I also used a diyautotune 36-1 wheel and I bolted it between my crank pulley and balancer. I had a friend machine about 1/16" off the back of my pulley and a few thousands off the front of the balancer. If there is any remaining mismatch between pullies the belts take it up just fine. I really considered your method but to maintain my aluminum pullies I would have had to weld an aluminum mounting ring to the aluminum pulley and screwed my toothed wheel to that.

So Chad you're running sequential?

When I was running the turbo my solution was to just cut the back of the balancer snout on the lathe, but it didn't solve the problem that the wheel made it so the crank pulley was no longer hub centric on the balancer. The thickness of the crank wheel was the same as the nipple on the back of the crank pulley.

It's a BBK under drive kit. I had issues with the pulley for the alternator. Need to do some machining on it. Not the pulleys fault, the alternator.

I would love to run an intake elbow with a cold air intake on mine but it would prevent me from running a Strut Tower Brace and that's the deal killer for me. I'm looking into custom intakes, do you have any first hand experience with them?

Re: My Alternative build

I was reading your post over at ST and came across the engine spec.
While I'm hesitant to use SCAT's 9000 series crank with power levels such as yours, you seem happy with it (and I know your experience outweighs mine by a considerable margin). Care to share some insights? For what it's worth, my intentions will be along the lines of open road events or at the very least, flying or standing mile plus of course drag racing. Then there's driving 2500 miles cross country now and again.

I didn't use the 9000 series. I used a Pro Series LW.

However, I have many customers using the 9000.

With that said, a standard weight Molnar is a nice crank, I've sold and used many.

Thanks for that. I appreciate the reply.
I've heard good things about Molnar cranks. Their connecting rods too.
And FWIW, I'm sure many here appreciate you developing that engine in a 3rd gen Camaro. Gives us all a little more cred.
Thanks again.

I've heard good things about Molnar cranks. Their connecting rods too.
And FWIW, I'm sure many here appreciate you developing that engine in a 3rd gen Camaro. Gives us all a little more cred.
Thanks again.
see if he can get more out of your heads lol

Are the pulleys the same size as stock. What do they mean by underdrive?

No smaller, that is why they are called undersrive. Took a 2" shorter belt in fact.

On my March performance pulley set for my L31 the crank pulley is 25% smaller. The water pump pulley slightly larger. The alternator pulley is smaller. The p/s pump and compressor are underdriven 25%. The water pump and fan around 33% underdriven. The alternator turns about stock RPM. I idle 750 rpm in drive and about 850 rpm in park. The engine still runs cool, the a/c is as cold as it has ever been and the battery charges at 13.8-14.2 volts. The difference was night and day even on a 350 that did not rev higher than 5,200 rpm at the time, with a 6,200 lbs van wrapped around it. The engine reved quicker and had more power everywhere on acceleration.
