i have an '89 firebird gta. it already has a 3rd brake light but it's mounted with the aerowing spoiler which i am going to get rid of.
i want to get a 91-92 high rise spoiler and put a 3rd brake light mounted to the [ Outisde ] top of the rear window so i keep the lines clean. has anyone done this before / is there any forseeable obstacle to doing this? would it be possible to power it off the rear defroster ?

I dunno, but won't you have to drill mounting holes in the glass?

Could get the hatch off an 86 with the 3rd brake light mounted on it. Or I think in 87 they had it inside the glass but still mounted up top, not sure though.

91-92 birds had one mounted on the inside of the glass..such is the case with my 91 GTA and 92 T/A..

You don't need to drill into the glass(like the 86's) the 91-92 inside brake lights were put on w/double sided tape.
I'm going to do the same thing to my 86-i planned on running the wires behind the inner panel(where the 6x9's are)and into the wiring for the brake lights. Shouldn't be too hard at all.

Here's an interesting technical tidbit:
On the '86 cars with the external brake light, the light gets its power from two contacts mounted next to the latch. the wiring is actually applied on to the inside of the glass like the defroster grids. the power then goes through the tail light mounting screws in to the light itself.
The defroster grids' power actually comes from a couple of contacts on the hatch struts.
If it was me, I'd go with the '91-'92 internal brake light, because it doesn't require replacement of the rear window, extra contacts and the like. If you really want that external light, make sure you get all contacts and stuff from the latch area for stock operation. I suppose you could just stick the tail light on the glass, and drill a hole in the weather stripping to run wires through.
