"inexpensive" is an open-ended word. Inexpensive 17" wheels are ROH, or ZR1, Z06, Y2K Vette knock offs. Around $250/wheel give or take.
For 16", you can get black GTA wheels for about $520/set brand new, or used for $300. Same with IROC wheels.
In 15", you've got 10,000 choices for around $400-500/set.
You can also get some cheap-*** 14" chromies at Pep Boys for $25/each. It all depends on what you consider to be an improvement over stock, and what your budget is. Personally, I would upgrade to IROC or GTA wheels if I was on a tight budget. I have found very few affordable 15" wheels that I'd spend money on. I'd live with the stockers until I could afford the IROC or GTA style.

17! You can probably save money quicker then I can. Say dont tell you parents when or if you have a job so they cant ask for rent. Before you know it they want you to pay all the rent so they can kick back and do nothing. Well if it gets to that move out like I did and in this case I'm saving more money that living at home. This is the time when you can make the most money and its all profit. Remember one thing when your saving for the new rims. DONT TELL THEM YOU HAVE A JOB!!! If they find out .......SAY YOU GOT FIRED AND KEEP WORKING AAHAhhahaha!!!!

I know where your coming from when you talk about doing things
on a tight budget. I'm not 17 anymore but I'm in graduate school
and moneys tight. I was going to get 17" ROH ZS's but after you
add in the initial cost of the rims and the bigger tires needed they
just didn't fit my budget. So I decided that I would get a used set
of 91-92 z28 rims and strip and polish them. This way I still have
wider and lower profile rubber than with the 15" rims I currently
have. By the way what tires are you going to get. I'm looking at
kumho tires from tirerack.com the 255/50/16's are only $92 and
I have heard really good things about their performance and
quality. I've included some pics of the before and afters with my
rims, and this is my first time ever polishing aluminium. I also
did it all by hand all it takes is a little time and patience.
