Question about adding "pearl" to paint

At first I wanted to paint my Camaro black (like the rest of my projects), but I'm a little worried about when I open the hood. I don't have the money to yank the motor and paint the engine bay......so, I was thinking about repainting it the teal color it is now, but adding "pearl."

Has anybody done this?....any pics?....will it make it darker or lighter?

Pearl is a separate layer that goes on after the color and before the clear. I've done a little experimenting with some left over pearl from my GTA and it looks horrible on anything except light colors. I tried it over red and it turned it pink & nasty. I tried it over gray and it basically disappeared. They do make pearls designed to go over colors, but I haven't experimented with those yet.

I am with Jim. My first car a 82 berlinetta was base coat cherry red with violet pearl over that and it was damn pink. I drove that car proud. I sold it for $500 to my moms BF so I still see it I might actually but it back later down the road and turn it into my track car. It is a hardtop also. Only use the pearl on light colors. Unless you really don't care what it looks like. Then what the Fu(k wetsand away and paint that fu(ker

Some paint colors have pearl right in the mix, not added as a seperate coat. I think what they were referring to was adding pearl to the clear coat, which goes on top of the color. I have a '75 Vette that I painted a '94 Vette color (name: dark cloisonne blue) and there was a TON of blue pearl in the color mix...we then took an old lincoln truck lid, painted it, then tried a few different pearls in the clear, but they all looked like crap, so we just went straight clear.....so, adding pearl to your color is different than adding it to the clear coat.....

Have Fun!

My car has pearl rite in the paint mix, its a copper color and it adds the yellow wherever light is hitting it directly.

Pearl can be... and most times added into the paint. But can also be added to the clear coat also. it all depends on what affect you want. it will change the color of your paint a little bit. it could go darker or lighter depending on the color of pearl you use and if you mix it into the paint or into the clear.
you can get pearl in a paste, powder or just like paint

this is a good web page about pearl and some of the different types
