clear tailight concept

ok guys,

i have messing around with the clear tailight concept for 3rd gen maros and this is the best(i think) that i have come up with..

it involves using the original face plate from the tails and then fabricating something inside(once disassembled) on the inside making it look kinda like the euros that they have forgotten to make for our cars..

good or bad comments welcome...

as this is only a drawing and i have still yet to look at possible materials im only showing this to gather an opinion...

they way it looks would anyone pay money for a pair if i make this possible and how much would you ultimately pay in the end(based on this design)
and please excuse the way its posted sheet was too big to go the other way in the scanner

Not too bad, but make the turnsignals red. or you could just make them clear, use red led 1157 bulbs, and figure out a way to make the reflector red so they are legal.

iroc2nv, i'm relived. our two concepts are tottally different! thank Gosh for that man. we are definately on the right track i think though. btw, unless you like having the cops really harass you, the reflectiveness is a good idea.

That one that trigger posted looks like they used the covers of overhead flourescent (sp?) lights. Yuck.

Not a pretty sight.

I don't like the clear on the European cars so I know I would hate them on our cars. Just my .02 cents.

I believe you are correct. As much as I DON'T know about that pic, it did somthing funny as a thumbnail... the lights turned into normal colored taillights... yet, when I enlarged it, they went clear. So definitley some type of Photo-Chop, cause I dunno how you'd pull that off. On the other hand, I don't so much mind the way it looks on that car. I'm not one thats gonna call it rice or anything, because that car is CLEAN, I mean, it looks sweet. And you'd have to do alot more than give it Clear Tail Lights to make it look bad I don't think I'd do it to my Z, but thats my prefrence. But I can respect that setup on that preticular car, JUST because it IS so nice, and that it does kinda go with the whole color scheme, makes it look clean or somthing.... can't quite put my finger on it.

My $.02

I'm willing to bet hitting yourself that many times in the head would either incur a concussion, or death from blunt force trauma.

I dont understand why having clear lights makes your car an import like some of you are insinuating. Do you think that way because alot of import people do it? Well what about other mods import ppl do that we do? How about installing a race seat, lowering my car, adding bigger rims, or boosting my engine? Does that make me a '*****'? I just dont understand where some of you are comming from.

So he wants to do a taillight mod. So what?? If you dont have anything constructive to add then why waste your time? Comments like 'Go buy an import if you wanna drive an import' or 'yuck that blows' dosn't help at all.

Whatever ya do, don't use blue lights, unless you want to get *** tagged by the cops. They don't like it when you use there colors.

I think clear tails might be cool. I would have to see them. But I'm down for the Idea....

My opinion

Well , for me there are blackouts ¡¡
I dont like too much the look of clear but hell i love blackouts ...but not so much ...
I Love T/A tails (all years look smoked) but for maros ..i would suggest a smoked tail which never happened by factory ..
Why ??
A car with smoked tail means performance ??
For me yeah....smoked lights give me the sensation of speed and outlaw ¡
What you think ??

I think the alll white lenses are a good idea. They would look good on silver/white cars, maybe yellow, but probably not as good on the darker colors. thiers my $.02, not thats its worth that after inflation........

I'd say so, the fog on the right and the licence plate is a dead give away. + the lines around the tail lights dont look to straight.

Although they certainly aren't for me, I could deal with clear lenses on some cars. They look great on that silver Camaro. But altezzas... those suck on everything.

How about installing a race seat, lowering my car, adding bigger rims, or boosting my engine? Does that make me a '*****'

Totally clear taillights should be OUTLAWED and the people running them should have their cars impounded or towed home and made to sit until they were fixed. Yes, I do agree that they might look OK on some cars but they are COMPLETELY DANGEROUS on the road. If the sun is shining you can not see them. Mostly because the kids that slap them on wont spen the extra 20.00 or whatever for the correct covers that go over the lights and try putting painted bulbs in, that fade to white or burn to black over time. Making them impossible to distinguish from a reflection. PLEASE, it might look OK but DONT DO IT unless you want your nice ride CREAMED from behind because someone couldnt tell you hit your brakes, or even worse having to deal with causing someone to have beed killed needlessly.

When you say our cars do you mean firebirds? Because I asked apc and they said they have no plans for the 82-92 Camaros.

just do a search at yahoo and it should come up...

exdog, i have considered exactly that already. my version (i can't speak for iroc2nv) will be reflective red and orange, there will be no actual white, but reflective silver for the backups. the lenses will not be frosty looking, but they will be a clear sheet of plexiglass or a similar material. if anything i think that the car may even be more visible at night seeing the middle part of the tail will be illuminated red or orange. the light bulbs will be actual colored bulbs as well, or even colored LEDs. after all, looking cool is alot farther down on my list compared to stayin' alive(yes i started singing the beegee's when i said that, LOL)

All clear lights that still have the black grids (camaro or firebird) look alright, but ones without the black look cheap (like the one made with ceiling tile).

That is why I like the firebirds. Usually one solid color all the way across.
I love my taillights on my 84 bird. Even if they are the stock coupe. Ive put the black tinted T/A lights and even the 85 Grid Taillights. I didn't like them as well as my originals.

Yeah, I was driving down the road the other day and I saw this ***** with clear tail lights. I didnt see his turning signal till I was about 10 feet from him. It was during the day. Well I still think they look like **** but you bring up in interesting point. Thats so true.

ok ok.....

guys,.... lets try to share our opinion nicely so this thread dosen't get closed like others, and so we can discuss this issue....

yes i agree with certains aspects as it refers to the not being able to see in the daylight.....

thats why i installed apc 1157 leds in mine....

second... the reason i went clear, is to match my crome looking cobras... i figure with clear tails and side markers it will look cool....

and third... i agree that there is alot of people that bought import vehicles like in the fast and the furious around here...

and they all pretty much buy the same thing as other import owners do... like clear taillights....

we all want the car we own to stand out beyond the rest.. and most of us sucseed... so can't we agree that were not trying to imitate others by buying or making different things for our cars?

it's just a personal kind of thing....

apc

ok all,

i just got off the phone with jim from apc(american products company) and he said that they WERE playing with the concept of altezzas tails for our cars BUT it was getting expensive, there wasnt alot of demand and it was VERY hard to make it street legal...so they scrapped it..although he was very cautious to say that its not totally out of the question..so...all that want these for our cars, call, email bug the HELL outta apc...show them that there IS a demand for them and maybe theyll do them!! the number that i use to get ahold of them(for my shop, it may be long distance but im not sure) is 1 909 898 9840 and their web addy is www.4apc.net/

lets bug these guys so that they make some for our cars..(that is of course if you want them)

So insted of clear with red dots, it would be a smoke with red dots right. I would interested in that more than clear lights

i had more of a no-dot theme in mind perhaps. maybe jsut solid colors similar to a stock tail light, but inside, with a clear cover. some things are better left unchanged....

Well they are functionally better than fully clear lights and would be safer as well. Theyre more like the altezza that true clears. I still am not sure I would like them on any thirdgen but it is a matter of taste. If you want them go for it, its not about rice its about how good they look and if you like them. If someone dosnt like it, they dont have to look at it. (But we'll still talk about how tacky we think they look). My concern with the clears as stated before is that you cant see them. Your plan would be able to be seen day or night.

The only clears from the factory are the altezza style like the ones pictured above. Lexuz uses them too i believe. I have no problem with those because they shine just like regular tail lights. The ones i am talking about are the ones that the civic guys put on with no red centers. They look just like the originals with no color in the lenses.
For example:
These are Altezza
