When I get my Evo II, I plan to have a custom carbon fiber hood made (replica of the Evo II hood) .... but I'm gonna have it done locally. Should cost me around a grand.

ok heres the deal.... He can make any hood you want if he gets that hood to make a mold of, and since hes diffinatly not gonna buy one to do it, were gonna have to supply them.
The price will be approx $650usd plus shipping if the order for one type of hood is less than 3. If more than 3 are order the price will drop.
The hoods can be made with the louvers built in or made to accept the stock louves. And again these would be two different style hoods(2 molds).
Yes carbon fibre can be painted. But why would you want to.
That was one of the things i considered when looking for hoods. The fact that you dont have to paint the hood makes the total cost of the hood cheaper.

If I got one, I would paint it immediately. The weight savings and strength alone would be worth the cost.
So, he could design the blisters right in? That would be cool.

Can carbon fiber be painted?
Yeah. In fact, everytime you see a military jet you are looking at painted carbon fiber pieces.
Everytime you look at a Formula 1; or a CART car; or an INdy car you are looking at painted carbon fiber.
The big deal, is weight savings. And strength.

if this hopefully ever gets off the ground =/
the guy doing the fabrication should ask for some sort of a partnership with one of the parts suppliers who run ads up top ... a legal profit sharing % thing maybe. we can't all just buy 2 hoods to get what we want

Thats a good idea. Ill ask him him what he thinks of that idea. there isnt much of a market for CF hoods up here thats why there a little pricey right now, he mostly deals with import hoods cause market for them is so big.
Anyways if anyone is serious (cash in hand) about getting a hood email me, other wise ill just cause consider this hood thing to be dead in the water.

The real point is the weight it reduces in the frontend. Now these guys who like stripes...how cool would it be to get the hood and paint it all, but leave stripes?

I'm in for a carbon fiber hood if it has the blisters. I've seen alot of real carbon fiber pieces that aren't that pretty. Is it going to have thick clear finish or just raw carbon fiber? I'm going to need a new hood sometime soon and haven't seen any I like. I was considering a fiberglass OEM hood and bolting the blisters on, but carbon fiber is def. interesting.

How much lighter is the carbon fiber hood vs a fiberglass one? I'd be very interested in a cowl hood if the weight savings is appreciable vs fiberglass, if not then why bother?

I dont know how much it may be lighter than fiberglass, but it seems most of us wanting it are after a repro of the stock Z28 / IROC hood since nobody even makes a fiberglass one.

In the original post the weight was stated at 10lbs. You are not going to find that in fiberglass unless it is a pin on style race hood.

I say screw saving 30 lbs of weight by putting a $$$$ black hood on a red (or any color) car...... lets be smart here..... lets save 50lbs and gain 40 HP by getting some aluminum heads... now thats an idea!!!

IIRC the average glass Z28 hood weighs in around 25-30lbs and the factory steel Z28 hood weighs 60lbs. It's sad that the only quality cowl hood on the market is a Goodmark steel cowl. If I still had my Camaro I'd jump on this deal in a heartbeat, that is if a cowl was going to be offered. 600 is not that bad, there are companies charging a lot more for mass produced ones for imports like the Eclipse.
Why don't you try to get a group purchase going? Ask the guy if he'll give everyone a better deal based on the total number of people who buy and total number of hoods produced in with 'X' hoods style.
You could offer 4 standard hoods to choose from:
Camaro - Z28 style minus louvers & blisters (user installs originals)
Camaro - 4" Cowl with a natural angle (see Goodmark for imspiration)
Firebird - Formula style minus screen incert (user installs originals)
Firebird - GTA minus screening panels (user installs originals)
Course this is all just a suggestion, should you take any of my advice seriously don't forget that there are tons of other F-bod sites with other members (read: potential buyers) out there to offer this one time deal.

Personally, I'd like the look of a black carbon fiber hood on a red car; reminds me of the old mopar musclecars that came from the factory with black hoods... it's racey and nostalgic with high tech modern weight savings to boot! If I wasn't selling my car, I'd love a custom carbon fiber hood made from GTAuto's 4th gen ram-air design; man, that would be sweet!

why would you paint carbon fiber?!
because it would look like a$$ if you didn't paint it! Ive seen far too many 5.0 mustangs driving around w/ black unpainted hoods! BAH!

OK, so far it looks like noone's putting down a solid yes or no. I won't be getting one of these unless it's offered in three months, in which case, I'd certainly get a cowl induction style. But on to the point: If you're interested, and you HAVE the money for it, post your car (year and model) and post what style hood you would like (stock, cowl, twin turbo, etc etc) so this guy can get some solid answers. It's already been stated that any molds getting more than three hoods produced will have a reduced price. This is a great deal, in my opinion, seeing as how noone else I've seen offers any kind of service like this for f-bodies.

man if you can do this i will sell the SS hood i just got and buy a stock iroc carbon hood. the stock steel hood wieghs exactly 74 pounds (acording to a scale i have). dropping from 74 to around 10 would make a difference you could feel instantly. if people dont know how to paint or prep carbon fiber or just want to bad mouth it, they should just bite their lip and keep their stock hoods and look like every other car like theirs on the road. if you come through id be interested.

Ok so far i have like only two people that seem to be in for iroc hoods.
The hoods come with a deep clear finish on them.
That maybe a good idea for you but for the rest of us who are trying to go faster by making are cars lighter, cause we already have our motors done, need to save weight any where we can and this is just another way to do it.
Once again ill say it, if you are about buying a hood (cash in hand) email me
Is it going to have thick clear finish or just raw carbon fiber?

I'll be needing a 1991 Z28 with blisters. The Blisters have to be carbon as I wont be painting it I'm concerened about the fit and finish. Just because my car came with all sorts asymetrical lines from the factory doesn't mean I want a hood made that way.
Can you post pics of parts he has done before.
Anyone know of any carbon fiber fabricators in the US, midwest area?

CaysE, I e-mailed 88TransAMgta and he told me that the guy would not do the hoods because there is not enough of an interest! If things have changed, being that i have yet to get another response from 88Trans, then i am in! Please e-mail me if you have more info. If i do not hear from you i will write you. I have a few questions. I am about to purchase a Viper NACA duct for my hood already and i want to know if he could mold it into my carbonfiber hood. If he would be making those other Iroc hoods it shouldn't be too far off for him to do since he already has the main mold for the hoods. I have an 86 Iroc and would just need the stock replacement size! If i am being too rediculous, just let me know, thanks for your time and i hope to hear something soon. Oh yeah, pictures of his work would be cool too! Later
