Anyone run 17s in the rear and 16s up front??

If so what tire sizes are you running and pics would be extremely helpful. I just ordered and received a pair of 17" ROH Snypers for the rears and currently I have 16x8 ROH Snypers all around, 2 of which will have drag radials mounted on them for the track so Im matched. For now I plan on keeping the 16s up front 245/50/16s (25.7" tall) and Im trying to decide what tire will fit and look right on the 17x9s for the rear. Im looking at 275/40/17s which are 25.7" tall but Im wondering if they are too wide and will rub(I have an adj PHB) or if they would look right. Im also considering 255/45/17s I think they were which are the same height as my 255/50/16s now (26.1" tall). Any info or opinions is greatly appreciated especially if you have pics so I can get an idea of what the car may look like...

Why not 17s in the rear and 16s in the front?

If I might make a suggestion... make sure the overall diameter is as large or larger than the front AND the height of the sidewall in the rear is as great or greater than the front. What this really means, is your rear tires will have to have at least 1/2" more sidewall than the front to make it look right or else they will look skinny compared to the front.

The problem you have run into is that most 17" tires are low-profile and adding 1/2 inch sidewall on a 9" rim relative to a 245/50-R16 may be next to impossible. So whereas your idea seems reasonable, when you look at the options I think the only one left is to use 17" wheels on the front too.

Thanks for the info and 17s for the front may be in my future but not til early next year sometime. Whats in my immediate future tho is tires all the way around, lets say I went with 275/40/17s what size 16 would you suggest looking at to get the car to look right?? Your reply about side wall height and height is exactly what Im worried about I dont want rubber bands in the rear and a bulky tire up front it just wont look right. The front sits nice with the Eibach Pros and 245/50/16s but the rear looks less full so Im trying to make the right tire choice and since I dont know a whole lot about tires/rim choice thats why Im asking all the questions I can, thanks again for the info!

I'd have to agree with that one.

I think you said you already had 17x9 rims for the rear. If you're going for 17s all around then spend the money in the right place to get you to your end goal. Don't worry about looks. It will come together soon enough. I drove around in my '68 El Camino for several months with new 295/50-R16 tires on 16x9.5 rims on the rear and dorky beat up 14" rims with white letter 14" tires on the front. Oh well... it was only temporary until I got the front rims and tires to match.

The largest tire you can fit on a 17x9 rim is 275/40-R17. Any bigger and it gets to be sloppy handling. Actually, 255/45-R17 is the ideal size... but it doesn't look as good.

I use 17x9 rims all the way around with 275/40-R17 Nitto 555R drag radials on the rear with 245/45-R17 Nitto 555 Extremes on the front. I didn't want balanced heights because it doesn't look balanced when it's on the car. The rear ends up looking shorter (optical illusion). So I kept the front tires short to make it appear balanced. Make sense?

I've got 17's in the front, 18's in the rear.. I've also got to extra vette rims (same style) in 17's with drag radials on em.

You could always run 17 in the rear, and 16's up front....

If you want to keep the 16's up front for now, go witha shorter sidewall 16" tire------>P245/45R16
On the rear 17" wheels either the P255/45R17 or P275/40R17.
That will give you the right look from the side, where your profile matches.
1991 Z28, Yours looks just right!
and there is no P275/45R17 sized tire made for him to put a taller tire in the rear anyway.
