Why do people often hide their licence plates?

You know, when people post a photo of their car on the net. Have they got something to hide?
Also a friend who is looking for a new car rang a seller and asked for the number so he could do a check to see if it was stolen or been in an accident and the seller would not give it to him.
What's the deal I mean you can just walk down the street and see a cars number.

Thanks

Simon

If you **** the right person off, or someone wants to be done, I would guess you could report the tag # into the police.
And same with the VIN #, but I think more can be done with that, negative wise.

It is more of a legal thing so that when websites hosts an uncopyrighted picture without the rights of the owner, they can't be sued by the owner unless they hide the plate. People do sue over their car being posted on the web without approval the owner.

He he he...... Internet security. You can find out just about everthing about a person who post the wrong stuff here or anywhere on the net. So just a word of advice. When you register for stuff dont put your real phone# and dont put your real address. I dont even put my real name anywhere. Half the time I might forget and show the plates. I just dont care that much. If someone really wants to find me come and get it. I like to play too.

Thanks for answering the question. It seems there are some con men out there who can cause you some problems if they know too much about you. This should confuse them...

That was a bit harsh
In the UK unless you have access to the Police computer system you can't tell diddly from a licence plate. You can only tell where the car was originally registered, not where it resides now, you certainly can't get public info on the current owner.

Simon, even through the snow haze that looks like a great paint job.

I don't think if it's that big of a deal. You show your license plate when you drive down the road...whats a few more people seeing it going to hurt?

Car: Camaro of course
On all of my cars, I but a piece of black tape over my vin, With the plate I usualy park in a garage, and I have a smoked plexy cover on my plate (and only have a rear plate). With the tech of nowadays one should be very carefull. With mearly a IP address someone can find out where you live, and if you feel like lying, yes you can find out where someone lives, there name, phone etc, from a vin or plate number. I have.....a friend who did that a few times

I think I must be the fool hardy type I guess. I don't mind letting people see my tag. I feel like if someone wants to start something by messing around with me they can try if they want but I don't think they will be able to do much to me. I don't even mind letting people know where I live. I have nothing to hide and everyone can see my tag daily anyhow so if someone really wanted to do something it will be hard to stop them from getting my tag number. I have a pic of my tag but I am having trouble with my digital cam right now. I will post it if I can get this thing fixed.

theres definatly people that do that sh*t on the internet and track u down. ive had my vin# tracked down before by some weird guy trying to report my car but they caught him in a lie.. he said i almost ran him over doin 80mph... but i dont know anyone who can read a vin while passin by at 80 mph. i guess he just wanted to be a dick and try to get me a ticket. also there was a guy not to long ago on this site that said someone used his pic on ebay. theres a hell of a lot more weirdos on ebay then anywhere else. thats where all the fraud goes down.
