Lexan T-Tops, before and after polishing
Decided to try to polish my lexan T-tops, they were looking pretty bad from the sun shining on them for 10 years, I polished the drivers side and put it back on the car to compare, all I can say is WOW what a difference. Notice the trees reflections. If anyone wants to do this I started with 3M 800 grit wet sanding paper, using lots of water, then after all the scratches were gone I used 1000 grit, then 1500 grit, finished it with an orbital polishing buffer with Meguiar's paint cleaner, then used Meguiar's polish to finish it. I did the corners by hand that the buffer wouldn't get, just don't leave the buffer in one spot and let it build up heat and it works great.

That is great work! What type of buffing compound did you use??? And how long did it take per side??

Cruzin Kaz, see the first post for the products I used, it took about 30 min. of hand rubbing and about 10 min. with the buffer on the first side.
86IROCNJ, I'm still working on the passenger side, then I need to repaint the trim where I rubbed the paint off of it at, I tried taping it off but the tape got in the way of hand rubbing too much so I just took it off, I'll post a finished picture when I'm done.

Someone really has to post a pic of this Zaino product. I haven't heard anything about before till I got on this web site. It must be more of a American product??? I've been detailingfor 13 years now. Never seen it or used it. Hmmmmm.... I wonder?

Yea, let me start out by saying my t tops are pure crap when it comes to finish al-together. I tried to clean the rust off of the frames and used crappy touch up paint for it, that doesn't look good. And the tops are scratched to heck due to being neglected by the previous owner. I can just use a regular wood sander w/ the wetsanding paper on it and then buff them out starting at 300, then to 800, then 1500? It'll work good? I was pondering this idea a week ago, guess it can be done, by the way, that looks AWESOME!!

I would not recommend using a regular power sander for it, it should be wet sanded by hand or it might build up too much heat and clog up the paper and or warp the panels, wet sanding is a no-no with a power sander anyway unless it's cordless, the wet sanding will give it a very dull appearance till you do the final buffing then it will shine.

Thank you DartbyU. I appreciate your concern for my well being, I could have messed up my panels. So your saying I should hand sand them with wedsanding paper at the grits mentioned above in the correct order, with water, and it will look good? Thanks again, I'm gonna try to fix these crappy t tops

I believe Lexan tops were used starting in 89 or 90, heard they quit using them in 91 due to warranty problems, then they came back for 92 which is what I have, I guess they didn't fix the problem very well because they don't hold up to the weather very good. You can polish glass you just have to do it differently, there are special glass polishes you can buy.
WOW that looks REALLY REALLY good, now I'm going to have to go do mine, they look pretty bad and I had thought about trying to polish them but I didn't think Lexan could be polished, but it looks like it can
Hope mine turn out as good.

And finally, what process did you use to get yours to look like that?

They're plastic. I sanded my tops with 240, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and then buffed them. I haven't heard of Innotec either. It's just some generic polish that I found in the garage, but works surprisingly well on plastic.

Re: Lexan T-Tops, before and after polishing
Yeah you can use fine wetsand paper and cutters but you would be better off buying a cheap electric buff to give you a better result and you will be able to use it on your paint as well. Most cheap buffs are made in "ChingChong" land and they cost sweet "FA" and last a long time for the home user. 3m have some good products to use and so has Ferecla when dealing with plastics

Re: Lexan T-Tops, before and after polishing
very good info.
what would you suggest on a car with painted t-tops? yes, thats right, painted t-tops. start with a slightly more abrasive grit or keep with what the write up says?

Re: Lexan T-Tops, before and after polishing
i got my tail lights in the other day, and decided to clean them up. they were in good shape, except that the lenses were cloudy and dirty like my old ones. since they weren't scratched at all, i decided to clean them and polish them with some meguiars plastx plastic polish using my mothers power ball. i gotta say, it worked DAMN GOOD! all of the dirt and grime came off easy and the tail lights look new. i also used this method on my grimy bumper lights and it made them look great too! say goodbye to dirty lookin lights and lenses
