'86 is the year history was made....
Your 1986 rear hatch will look like this picture if it is legit. No other year looked like this.

Well it could be the fact that it was made late 85. After about Oct of a year the cars are giving the next year. What month/day was your car made? That might be the missing link to your question. By the way it was 86....

Welcome to the world of trying to figure out what the heck your 10+ year old car is!
My VIN says '86 2.8 SC.
The hatch is an '86 (since it has the light).
The door sticker says manufactured 11/85, so that would be an '86.
It's definitely a SC
But... the engine is an 88/89 2.8... in fact, the entire engine bay is an 88/89. Engine, accessories, placement of battery/vapor canister (the 88/89's were the opposite of all the other V6's). It even has the 88/89 dual snorkle intake. It seems like someone had to have taken EVERYTHING out of the bay from another car and put it on this one, which would be absolutely insane. We've been trying to figure out what's going on with this car for a year now

well open your rear hatch and look at the area to the left of the latch on the car there should be four metal contact plates there that will tell you that your car did have a third brake light at one time.

Not really sure about the RPO but if the contact were removed there would still be a big hole there unless the whole back panel was replaced.

Other cars may have them also. My friend bought an 87 SC off of his uncle and his uncle had installed one on there for his wife to be "more safe" i guess. Thats what he told me and it was indeed an 87. So there are some exceptions to the rule. Now a days with these cars so many parts are changed, maybe you just have a different hatch, thats all. I like to see whats on the hatch of a thirdgen to see it its the slowest of them all, the 86 tpi with the "peanut cam", lol. J/K They are just displacemently challenged! lol Now no one take offense, it was a lame joke, but i do look at the rear hatches to see if they are 86's like mine!

Meridius was right, there is a 4 point contact patch at the base of the hatch. Someone must have removed it at some point.
