It looks cool, in fact I keep thinking about doing it with my '68 Camaro (I have it sitting in the garage primered in black right now waiting until a warm day so that I can paint it Electron Blue).

You can't drive around with primer though, the talc in primer absorbs moisture and will cause rust, quickly! You will have to paint it with a black that has a dulling agent in it. Or if you go base-clear, then the clear has to have a dulling agent in it.

If that is the look that you want & like, then try getting the military paint that is radar absorbing... that way you will be a black-hole to the police radar guns

Mark, for the love of all that is holy, please do not tell me that you are going to drive your car around in black primer. That is the most rednecked thing you can do with a thirdgen

guess not now, lol, I was thinkin of buyin the SS hood, gettin a new fender and then save up again for a paint job in a few months.

I don't drive the car much anyways.

I've seen this one 68 Camaro that is primered yellow and doesn't look that bad actually.

If I had to drive around in a primered car, the black would look better than gray.

Flat Black paint is cool. Driving around in any kind of primer is just plain stupid.

Some people can't afford a paint job right away, which is why some people drive around in primered cars. I don't like the way flat black has a grey appearence to it.

Oh I understand driving around in a primered car because you haven't gotten your paint job yet, I've done that.

But doing it that way because you want a flat primered car...blah.

Car: too many ...
some people who race like to keep their car primered w/ clear because its alot easier to fix/replace body panels and primer if you crash as opposed to painting the car for real. i'm not gonna stereotype anyone who drives primered cars on the street because i dont know them or their reasons. maybe they are waiting for a real paintjob when they finish some more body work? who knows

Heres what it looks like after sitting for awhile. Well, the motor didnt get that way from sitting... Most people dont let the primer on the car for as long as I did, but I had no choice. It got really faded and blotchy looking.

The flat black tends to fade fairly quickly. It looks alright when it first comes out, but after year or even a few months, it begins to fade. I painted my window louvers flat black and it faded to grey in about 4 months.

Use a bank, save up money for a paint job and body work........Don't until you have all the money to finish it.......SAVE your money till you can get it all done at once and don't primer the car....Once you have all the money do everything at once, starting something in hopes of finishing it later rarely happens.......Your plans may change....

How about the black primer with a clear coat over it? It sounds good, but what would it look like?

The look I want is low-key but not ghetto. I don't want it attracting attention like a pretty-boy trailer queen, but the plain primer look doesn't get me going either.

Cops seem to be drawn to primered vehicles like magnets.

My buddy's Stang. It's getting a 408 stroker. We are expecting low 10's out of this one. Its actually a sealer not a primer, this was better than the powder blue the car was origionally. We had the painter at my dealership shoot it. Dunno what the difference between a sealer and a primer. This is more like what fenders are coated in when you get them new before you paint. Anyways, the car will be '69 Boss Orange with flat black Boss stripe down the middle and flat black moulding. We've already started shooting the door jambs in color, its going to look sweet.

This is kind off topic, but have you seen black gel coats that some companies use with thier body parts. I saw a gel coat on a replica Shelby Cobra and I thought it was paint - that's how good it looked. I'm guessing that clear over flat black might have a similar look.

Don't know what they came off, the rims were on the car already. It belongs to our local American car club, we bought it as a drag project for next year. The 350 is in the garage being built, and the car is still run a 6 cyl. at the moment.

Dang, this thread's two years old...

Two years after talking about not running around in primer, and I'm doing it, heh.
