I don't think size diameter wise doesn't matter much, but width certainately does. The difference from 15s to 16s and 16s to 17s is noticable, but 17s to 18s doesn't really seem to make a difference. I think the perfect size is 17s, thats the largest I would go on a thirdgen. 16s look great too, as long as they are at least 8 inches wide.

I think 18's look great if they are tastefully done, I dont really like the triple chrome holy roller bling bling rims. I think Corvette rims look great on thirdgens, as well as most aftermarket rims do, but bigger is always better. :lala:

I agree. Deep dish wheels always look a half size larger than face mounted wheels too. deep dish 18s just look way to big.

I think its preferance based. Some people buy aftermarket wheels in larger sizes for looks, others buy it for performance reasons. Some people prefer the older 'muscle look' with smaller diameter wheel and bigger sidewall tires that look like they'll hook real good. Some people go for the 'handling look' with big diameter wheels and small sidewall tires that look like they can take turns real hard. So its really up to whoever is doing the buying and what kind of look they want.

For me personally I enjoy large diameter deep dish wheels with a polished lip and small sidewall tires. I have seen almost all wheel sizes on Camaro's (14's thru 20's) and I think 18's are the biggest that still look good. 17's look good as well, but I can tell the difference between 17's and 18's from a distance. 18's fill up the wheelwell better than the 17's and give the car a more agressive look.

Going for show .... I have a set of 18" Boyd Coddington Tuned wheels ready to go on my 91. All I need are the tires. I decided to go with a 40 series tire. I will combine this with adjustable ride height, which will allow me to drop the car 3 inches and tuck the 18's under the fender for that very agressive look at the shows. I really like these wheels because they have a very deep dish, but they are so expensive I would never use them for racing.

Going for performance ... I will be putting the 17" ROH ZS's from my 91 on my 90. I plan to run 40 series sidewall tires because I have noticed flex with 50 and 45 series sidewall. If I find the 40's have flex, I may step down to 35 if I need to. I plan to combine this with adjustable right height as well (same setup I will be running on the 91) but there will be alot of experiementing to determine the best setup for racing. I would actually prefer to run 16's with smaller sidewall tires, but I ended up with 17's so I'll stick with it. The advantages of the 16's would be a lower center of gravity compared to the 17's with the same sidewall tires, and the fact that they would be cheaper to replace if I ever did crack or curb them drifting. The advantage of 17's are the ability to house larger and better brakes and the looks of 17's.

I thought about it yesterday, I now have 4 sets of wheels for my Camaro's ... 15's (stock RS) ... 16's (Stock IROCS) ... 17's (ROH) ... and 18's (Boyds). Pretty crazy!

that is crazy.........

i think the size determines how the rim looks.

personally i think the 18 gives more appearance an edge to the z06 rim. i think 18 in the 10-spoke ss would be way to much spoke.

Jeff, I'm gonna have to say your car will look great with anything you decide, but in my personal opinion I think it would look best with 17" chrome IROC's or the C5 wheels (Z06 or 5 spoke) in chrome. The rear tire should be a 285 and the front a 245. Along with the brakes you're getting I think the 5 spoke design would look best and show them off the most.

if your running 17's and you want a low profile tire go with a 255/40/17 its near the same width as a 275/40/17 but with much less sidewall. Ive been looking into it. The 255's are also cheaper for those of us like me that go through a set of tires every year.

lol ya right, thats not what your mamma told me last night. JJ but to get back on topic...

18/s do look good, unfortunently they cost more than a 3rd gen camaro or firebird, I paid $1000 for my camaro why spend $2500-3000 on wheels and tires, tires being the expensive part. plus 18's would rub like a b1tch on the highway or under any kind of normal spirited driving, 17's would just make the better choice, in drivablity and show. 17's also look good when the car is sitten 2 inches off the ground! with 18"s , good luck lowering your car.

when it comes to the z06 rim the 18" is only a 1/2" each way for the spokes....it is extremely large. for those of you who own c5's or have seen them up close know what i mean.

an 18" rim is the same price as the 17" in the z06 style...but, the tires are roughly 50 more each. not that it's such a big deal but the combined weight is just under 40lbs more (rotational) to go 1" bigger...........worth it? i think not.

the size with a proper sidewall isn't that much of a problem even on a 2" sportline drop........but is it worth it in looks, size, and performance. not to me.

i think i'm going to go with the 17 9.5's all around with a 245/40 and a 275/40 setup. true it isn't as large as the 18", but it saves me 30lbs+ rotational weight and will still look good. it's just ashame they're the same price.

thanks for the replies guys..........!

I have 17x9 ZR1 rims with 275/45ZR17 tires on my Camaro and 18x8 Eagle Alloys with 255/45ZR18 tires on the TA. IMHO, there isn't a rim on the planet that looks better on a thirdgen Camaro than the ZR1. The 18" Eagles would probably look like wagon wheels on it. With the fourthgen TA though, it's a completely different story. The 18s are the perfect size for fourthgens. Just the right amount of tire and rim in the wheel well. The taller height of the fourthgens complements the taller 18s. Thirdgens are too low and lean for 18s. 17s go much better on thirdgens.
