Value of thirdgens?
Value of thirdgens?
Just wondering if anyone has noticed that people think cause they put $10K into a $3K car that it's suddenly increase's it's value to over $12,000. Why is this? Some who think's this would probably be better off parting the car out back to orignal and get their $3K back!
ie: classifieds- 91'Z28's for $9000 or 12,500

For some people, they can't handle the fact that they put so much money into a car and they will never see that money again so they value thier car high so they can get some of thier investment back. I consider my car priceless with 0 monetary value since it is my first car and I will never sell it.
Most of the money I put into my car was in repairs, but only 2k in actuall mods.

It's not the price of the car or the money invested but rather the enjoyment of the ride and knowing this hobby takes you places most average mortals cannot or will not go. We are building something for ourselves and fellow car guys to enjoy regardless of the cost. Then sometimes reality sets in and we would like to think someone else likes our rides as much as we do, hence we hope someone will ante up for it. Rarely happens, but we keep hoping. I will never sell my 87 Formula because I don't want the wife to know how much has been spent!!(8-9m) Just my 2 pennies, Dave.

if they price their car that high they better have and a documented appraisal saying that their car is worth atleast that. i put well over 20 g'z into my car. but my car is only appraised at 15 g'z. i know i'll never get that for my car. like once said its my first car and i'll never part with it.

As to the subject at hand, if a Camaro has the aftermarket parts I want on it then I don't mind paying for them. It's only sensible if it already has headers, exhaust, cam, etc., and it is all perfectly functional. You'll doubtless get the car for less than having to pay for all the new parts and then have them installed.
That would be more expensive, wouldn't it?

If I could have found a car with a brand new rear end, new driveshaft, new tranny, new 350, new exhaust, new interior, and soon new paint for less than the $13k+ I have in it now I would have definately bought it.
Had I have known I was gonna sink $13k+ into my car I would have NEVER bought it. Ok, maybe I would have
Will I ever sell my car? Nope. Way too much into it to even think about selling. I was offered $6500 a while ago before the engine went in. Besides, its not far from a brand new car now

I guess it all depends on how well the work is done and how the car as a whole is taken care of. I mean if someone builds a car and races it on a regular basis I wouldnt want to pay that much for it just because it could have alot of potential problems later on. If it was built and then driven normallyt and everything was done correctly and its a very clean car then I think it would be worth it. Would I ever pay that much for a car like that? NO, just because Im the type of person that would rather build something like it annd ake it mine and then I can say I did it. I think building a car is the best part about owning itbut for someone that jsut wants everything done and can say they have all the stuff on it to make it a really fast car then they can buy it. I guess what Im trying to say I can see why people would buy cars like that but I know I would much rather build one and make it my own, knowing exactly what I have in the end.
Or, if you're lucky and work at a dealership like I do, you can get a running TA for $800 that some sucker used as his trade in
Would I pay 8k or so for a built car? Maybe. It's one of those things where I'd have to see it, but off hand I'd say probably not. Part of the coolness of these cars is that feeling of drivin' it yourself 'cuz you built it yourself. I'm looking forward to building mine up into top shape. I was actually in the market for a 4th gen for almost a year, but my current car appeared in our wholesale lot I just couldn't pass up that price tag.
And I certainly don't expect to put 4 or 5k into it and then get even 3k for it, it's a labor of love and I don't plan on selling it ever, if I can help it. But that's just me...

I would have to put myself in the group that feels my car is worth much more than it actually is in the normal market. I have owned it since 2800 miles, put MANY hours into it, MANY dollars, etc. I would turn down any offers under $14,000 and have a hard time thinking about it for anything just over. It is just not worth selling for that price considering how much I have invested in it. I know full well that there are many , much nicer third gens out there than my own, but to me, it is worth top dollar!
Needless to say, I will most likely own it forever.....

Yeah, we get our fair share of v6's where I work too, and third gen's are pretty rare, I've been here almost a year and seen 4 come through, including the one I snagged. I see a whole lot of mustangs come through here though, as well as various imports and such. I work at Carmax so we get just about everything under the sun coming in, and it never ceases to amaze me at the condition of some of the cars, especially when I think about the fact that until a day or so previously, that car had been someone's daily driver. We're talking like James Bond style smoke screens when they start that take a good 5 minutes to clear out of the air.
It just goes to show the different attitudes about car values. Some people see a car as transportation from point A to point B and nothing more, and some people love their car like a child. Still, in line with the topic, I'd say I'm somewhere in the middle. I know what my car is worth to me, as well as what it would be worth to someone else, and those two numbers aren't very close to eachother...

I would never pay 8k for a built thirdgen no matter how nice it is. With 8k I could get a decent Vette, which I hope to get someday. I saw a pristine 92 black Iroc for $5000 at a dealership when I was looking for my first car. The car had 50,000 miles and had every option in the book and ran beautifully, but alas, I did not have the money to buy it at the time. I would value a nice thirdgen at around 4-5k depending on condition and milage.
I can't sell my car because it is only worth about $600 and I and not about to let all the money I spent in repairs, insurance, gas, mods, and hardwork go to waste. At least if I still have my car, all the money I spent doesn't seem like a waste.
