What do you think of this "first gen Firebird" taillight look?

I asked Devianb to whip me up something along those lines and then I modded his drawing to look like this. I like it. Comments?

I like it, you would prolly use parts from 85-90 TA tailights to make that right? i imagine it would look best if it had the "look" of the earlier tailights combined w/ the smooths urfaces of the later ones (85-02)

Go for it Steve

Here is the original idea. I am more partial to the second one on the bottom though.

Steve,

How do you plan on making the cover? It would have to be pretty thin since the lights already protrude a bit from the body - probably nonething thicker than 1/8th of an inch.

Devian:

I like both of those drawings. The second has an Acura lengend-ish style tailight shape, it quite interesting on a 3rdgen.

Steve: What material would you create this or surround the lights in? Im currently working on material experiments for my own custom lights, and i briefly considered eliminating the center piece as well (although i think it looks more like a 76-78 bird config then a 1stgen...) but here was the deliema: The center piece doesnt connect to the trunklid, nor is it solidly connected to the bumper, so it may still look out of place. I suppose you could fiberglass it in, then paint it... If made out of the center tailight piece, i think it will look lousy, because i dont think the paint will match, and even if it does the seams will ruin it.

It definietely looks like a worthwhile project......

Mine are more like a cross between 85-90 TA, and 91-92 GTA lights..... LED of course

instead of using a cover, you would be better off painting your tail lights. just take the lenses off and paint the inside and you dont have to worry about clear coat or scraping the paint off the lense. it also keeps the high gloss look of the lense itself.

thanks

The only problem with that is that it won't have a one piece look, and he might risk damaging a good pair of TA lights - they're not as cheap to replace as regular Firebird lights.

i love that idea. you know what you could do although it wouldnt have the grid look to it. use a set of firebird tailights because the lights are already seperated like in the drawing (kinda) you'd just have to fill the line with the color you want. then use some resin or bondo to fill the cracks to give it the one piece look.

Well, I'm thinking about using some heat formed plastic to do this project with. If I can cut out a long narrow strip to completely cover that area with a bit of hangover then I could use a "standoff" to "suck" the taillights inboard a bit. As long as the plastic is very form fitting (which could be a problem depending on thickness) without a large gap it could look pretty sweet. Using a router type of bit to cut out the slits so that the edges are rounded would finish the project. My concerns are getting the plastic to form correctly (it's hard to heat up a large enough area and work it before it cools) and if paint will adhere to the plastic properly.

Did I 'splain that properly?

Steve

the paint will stick. just paint the inside of the clear plastic after its formed and you will be alright.

thanks
